I had surgery Tuesday morning and for the most part feel pretty good. However, any time I take a sip of anything (water, Gatorade zero, Protein shake) a few minutes later I feel a rolling pain from my lower abdomen up towards my chest. Is this still gas? Is this the sleeve? I am taking omperozole prescribed for reflux but no other pain meds. Just trying to decide if I keep pushing the Fluid or wait till this pain goes away.

a little odd but you are inflamed in the stomach right now. So that could be it. I didnt have this issue with my sleeve. They prescribed a different acid reflux medication for a month. But i found pain medication did nothing for me after surgery. usually the gas causes people the most problem in their chest but could be down there. but yea you need to keep getting your fluids and Protein in as best way as possible. just take a sip and wait, sip and wait, sip and wait.

I had surgery on May 2nd. Anytime I drank or moved, my stomach was roiling with acid and gas. I called it my witch's cauldron. I was concerned as I saw so many that didn't seem to have this issue after surgery. Once I got to week 2 with full liquids (yogurt, Protein Shakes, etc.) and I could consume more items of substance, this improved greatly and is now not an issue. Hopefully yours will improve too.

I had this issue for the first 3 or 4 days after surgery. I found it was because I was drinking cold fluids and my stomach just couldn't handle it. I switched to warm broth and room temp fluids and that fixed it. But I also had to watch how much I drank. I had to take very small sips the first 4 or 5 days and just do them more often until my stomach started to calm down. Now, at 11 days post op, I can literally drink warm or cold fluids and I can drink larger amounts more often with no issues. Some stomachs are just very sensitive after surgery (like mine) and it takes a bit longer to calm down, but it'll happen.

Yiur tummy is a muscular organ so it could just be a muscular spasm. A lot was done to it during surgery & you have selling & inflammation. If it persists, give your medical team a call to be sure.

As @sleevediva suggested try warming your drinks or at least room temperature. The cold/cool liquids could be contributing to the spasms. I found warm drinks way more soothing.

I had something like this... it sort of ran across where I assume the suture line was. Didn't happen all the time, but when it did it was uncomfortable. It stopped within the first week.

I found warm liquids went over better - my fave was warm bone broth!

I had gastric bypass on the 12th and I've been experiencing the exact same thing but only when I drink room temp or cooler beverages. It's the weirdest feeling, kind of like chugging something carbonated and having the carbonation just stuck in your esophagus. I feel like broth has been my only saving grace, I cook it till it's super hot and then just slowly sip on it, as it cools down I just keep reheating it. As for meds, my doctor did give me something for stomach spasms, an antacid, nausea meds, and pain meds. I hate the way the pain meds make me feel so I didn't take one last night and I'm kind of regretting that decision. None of the meds take away that rolling pain though.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
