Mexico? Or stay in states? Where did you go + how much did you pay?

I'm having a tough time trying to pick a doc. I thought I'd be okay with going to Mexico but now I'm nervous.

Who was your in-state doc and how much did you pay? And if you went to Mexico, same question? I'm in south Florida! Thanks a bunch 🥰

I am also in FLorida. I did mine at the baptist bariatric center in Jacksonville, FL. I got the sleeve. It was roughly $18,000. My insurance would not cover it. I thought about mexico. Wanted to get it done at the ENDO hospital and their cost is under 10K. but me i just wanted to be near my house when i got surgery and did not want to travel.

I'm using Dr. Alvarez with Endobariatric. I paid $7799 for my procedure. That price is all inclusive and includes:

  • Transportation from and to San Antonio, TX to Piedras Negras, MX.
  • 2 nights in their hotel (night before procedure and second night after procedure)
  • Procedure and overnight hospital stay
  • Hotel stay in San Antonio on day of return

They have other services that you can choose to pay for like Spa Treatments.

I submitted my interest form online www.endobariatric.com/ and got a response within 24 hours. I then filled out my health form. After review, Dr. Alvarez approved me for surgery without further testing the following day. I received an email from Brandi with the dates that were available. I would have had my procedure last month, but I told my mom that I was doing it and she decided she wanted to as well. Due to her medical history, she needed some further testing that took sometime to get done with her PCP and a cardiologist.

I know they are currently booking in July. So not a terrible wait.

Thank you for the information. Are you going to drive? I was just looking at flights. They are running $740 around trip. Traveling from Cincinnati Ohio. Any tips?

I used Dr. Suggs with Alabama Bariatrics in Huntsville, AL. My cost was $8995 in total. Outside of that I had to cover my hotel stay and transportation there.

I'm flying from Florida to Texas, but I did think about driving it, but knew I wouldn't feel like driving myself home after. You are allowed to bring someone with you that will just need to cover their meals while they are there. My husband is staying back with our kids so that wasn't an option for me.

I would check SW as they fly from CVG to SAT. I'm flying in an extra day early and even that my ticket price was more that $100 difference in one day.

I used Dr John Weaver in Denver, Co. My insurance covered everything, and the sleeve cost a total of $20k. If I had paid cash, I was told it would be around $14k.

Hi Dolly - I'd love to share my experience. I did the travel program through Alabama Bariatrics. My surgery was scheduled on a Tuesday. I had to be in Alabama for an in person consult and final labs on Monday, surgery on Tuesday then I stayed overnight at the hospital until Weds. I was discharged to a hotel and had to stay local that night then I was able to drive home on Thursday. All of the pre-surgery labs were done through my primary care physician. My initial contact with Alabama Bariatrics was at the end of November 2021 and my surgery ended up being March 2022. It could have been much sooner but I didn't have a primary care physician so I had to wait almost 2 months for a new patient appointment which delayed things. Also, I could have gotten surgery in mid-February but I chose to wait until March so I could have it done the week my kids were on spring break so my parents (babysitters) didn't have to worry about taking them back and forth to school. Here's their website: https://alabariatrics.com/ feel free to ask me anything! I would highly recommend them, the entire process was super easy.

So I ended up going to Renew Bariatrics in Tijuana Mexico. Dr Perez. 6/4. Omg BEST EXPERIENCE EVERRRRRR!!! No pain waking up. Seriously felt like they didn't even do anything lol $4,600 in total. Doc only did 2 incisions bc he said my liver was so small. I'm down 21.5 lbs in 16 days. Seriously the best decision ever. Email if yall want any info *see below. Look em up on Google. Fabulousssss reviews. Pics n all. They pick you up from airport. Take you across boarder. 2 nights in hospital then to a hotel (which I opted out of) then back to the San Diego airport. Super smooth process!🥳👏👏👏

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
