Looking for other BPD patients

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had Biliopancreatic Diversion surgery back in June of 1983 - in fact I was #86 to have that surgery by my doctor. Since then I have kept the weight off, but have had continual digestion and intestinal issues. I cannot find any doctor (medical or naturopathic) that can honestly address my issues and I am looking for other patients that I might be able to discuss their life after surgery and how they found good competent medical care. I would like to find others that have led a long term "after weight loss surgery" life.

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with your procedure. You may want to search the DS forum.

Best wishes.

My wife is about 17 years out on her BPD/DS, and at least until COVID changed things, we were in a local support group of primarily long term veterans, legacy of her surgeon who had moved out of town, so we got a lot of feedback over years on various issues people had. Since COVID, most practices went online with their patient support, and that is often available to anyone interested.

A couple of suggestions. One is to look up Dr. Ara Keshishian - dssurgery.com - who is well regarded about all things DS and BPD. There is an extensive blog library on his site that you can look over and will probably find much of what you are looking for, though it may not be that well indexed. Another is paclap.com, from Pacific Laparoscopy, who is another BPD/DS specialist; they now have a monthly zoom meeting, IIRC on the second Tuesday evening of the month, and that usually has a number of veteran patients along with the doc who can offer suggestions on whatever problems you are having.

With your early 80's date, did you have a DS with BPD, or the original Scopanaro BPD? The Scopanaro did seem to be more troublesome, primarily from its shorter common channel leading to sometimes excessive malabsorption.

There are people and doctors out there who can help, though not necessarily in CO, which is one of the drawbacks of the procedure. Fortunately, most who are skilled with it know of the geographic problems and are used to dealing with patients remotely.

Good luck,

Wow - thank you so much for replying to my post! I had the Scopanaro BPD surgery at Goleta Valley Hospital in CALIF - done by Dr Holian, and was actually #86 to have that surgery! Dr Holian and his nurse, Trish, were life savers in those early days as it was a guessing game on much of what we were supposed to do post surgery. Much of what is done today was gleaned from those days of hit and miss post op care. I even was the 2nd (or 3rd?) person to get pregnant have give birth after having BPD surgery. After both Dr. Holian & Trish passed away I lost the much needed support and tried time and time again to find medical, or naturopathic doctors that could help me. I did see Dr. Ara Keshishian and ironically just reached out via email again to him today (we no longer live in CA). He no longer takes insurance, so I may try some of your other great suggestions. It would be so awesome to have a support group to toss ideas around. I don't have to have someone that lives in CO -- but that would be an extra perk! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my post. Right now I have an immediate need to find someone to address my painful issues - so will reach out to those you have suggested and always have Dr. K to fall back on if no one else can take me or takes my insurance.

Hope this wasn't too much TMI.

thanks again.....

Do you think doing it via Zoom so that @CNelson could join in, would be something good to suggest?

That's basically what has already happened - most migrated over to Paclap's zoom meetings. The group was a legacy of when Paclap was in the Los Angeles area before they moved to San Francisco some twenty years ago, Over time, Keshishian adopted it and then it closed up around COVID time and most moved online to Dr. K or the Rabkins' Paclap group.

There are probably other DS affiliated groups one can find, but those are the ones that I'm familiar with, being in CA. Off the top of my head, there are several DS docs in the NYC area - Roslin, Pomp, Herrin that I can think of that probably have groups that one can access.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
