Hello,

I had Gastric Bypass on November 23, 2021. I've lost 55 lbs since then and I'm quite proud of that... Is that a normal amount to lose? I've been walking every day and doing yoga when I can... I bought an elliptical but I dont use it as often as I would like....

I keep plateauing. I lost 5 lbs two weeks ago while I was traveling and then now im plateauing again

My mom says its because I'm eating English muffin (up to one per day) with cream cheese.... or quesadilla... She says im not getting good enough Protein in. I still can't eat many things without vomiting still so I feel I dont have many options. What do you eat?

I do also have shrimp sometimes after work or scallops... I can eat out having like kungpao chicken... broth soup... mussels/clams.... but at home I am having a hard time determining good food. 😕

Thank you

B

You shouldn’t be committing this far out. Are you eating too fast? Eating too much? Are you dumping by eating too much sugar or high processed white flour foods? Are you drinking while eating? It would be worth seeing your surgeon to discover what’s really going on.

Golden rule is eat your Protein first then vegetables if you ate able. Some plans say if you still have room some good multi/whole grain carbs but you likely won’t be able to especially if you are getting in your required protein first. 60g of protein a day is the usual goal. A simple google search will reveal the protein content of any meat, seafood, dairy, etc. Weigh your protein so you know how much you’re getting.

bread, rice & Pasta are usually not allowed on plans because they are nutritionally poor food choices & are too filling. So a muffin would be a poor food choice & the cream cheese would provide very little protein (less than a gram for a tablespoon).

Get in touch with your dietician & ask for some sample menu plans & recommended food lists as well as portion size recommendations,. You may benefit from being given macro & calorie guides as well.

Rate of weight loss is individual. Some lose more quickly, others more slowly. You seem to be doing ok but factors like age, gender, starting weight, weight loss history, etc. all influence your rate of loss. But you’re happy with what you’ve achieved, and you should be, that’s the most important thing. Congrats.

Can you eat hummus? I'm a fan (with a spoon, not on bread) And yeah, while you absolutely can eat an English muffin, you should probably only do so if you're getting adequate Protein or are happy with your weight loss. Although 55lb in this time frame seems great!

You had your surgery the day before me, congrats to both of us on our weight loss so far. At home why not keep your foods simple to start. These are the things that I am eating with a spoonful of veg here and there. Boiled egg, shrimp and a slice of avocado, a slice of ham wrapped around cheese, tuna salad, chilli con carne, coronation chicken, smoked salmon and cream cheese. Hope this helps

Thank you for reminding me I was making chili for a good stretch there and fell off the wagon so I am making more chili today as meal prep for the week. I also bought some tuna and Protein bars I like.

it’s constant work!

congrats on your weight loss so far we are surgery day buddies!

I also am trying to balance "taste" and cravings vs what is required. I am not a big fan of Protein Shakes so am not having them regularly, though try to get my Protein via eggs or chicken, but i doubt i am getting in enough. Any other alternatives to protein shakes or bars that is quick to consume without much cooking?

Try some high protein yoghurt to boost your protein intake. I disliked the shakes too & stopped them from purée stage. I bought & still buy YoPro by Danone (don’t know if it’s available in the US) which has 15 or 20g protein. They used to do a yoghurt drink too of 22 or 30g protein depending upon the size. Not what you’d call sweet - about 6% sugar from the fruit & milk.

Watch some Protein Bars as they are really not much more than candy bars: low protein, high sugar & high calories. Check & compare the nutritional information.

I looked at my hummus in the fridge and it only has like 1g of protein! not enough

Well....it has 8g per 100g. eggs have 13g per 100g. Protein is really important but you need to eat a wide variety of foods to be healthy and enjoy life. fruit and most vegetables have no protein.

I don’t like Protein Shakes either. I use an unflavored collagen powder from Vital Proteins in my tea or coffee once a day. It’s barely noticeable and it’s an easy way to get another 18g of protein

I agree about the protein bars. I've never heard of these. I don't consume any protein bars, so I'm unfamiliar with them.
There's a "10:1 ratio rule" and it is a guide to use to determine if the calorie to protein ratio is bariatric friendly. For every 1 gram of protein, you should have no more than 10 calories. So in the almond butter Perfect Bar there's 320 calories, but only 13 grams of protein. For a food that has 13 grams of protein per serving, to be bariatric friendly it should have no more than 130 calories per serving.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
