Bipolar and gastric bypass

Recommended Posts

Getting bypass soon. Worried about my medications. I'm on several meds but 2 for bipolar disorder and depression. And one for anxiety. Will they we absorbed? Has anyone had to deal with something similar?

I decided on the sleeve instead of bypass because I worried about the absorption of my mood stabilizer and antidepressant as well. Since then I have read many many posts on here of people on psyc meds that did fine post bypass as well. From what I have learned it is mostly the extended release medications that can cause issues post bypass and sleeve. Other than that. There are a few people that had to adjust doses up or down but I have yet to hear of anyone who says that they had to switch meds or anything like that.

I'm having an issue right now where I've had to move from Depakote DR to Valproic Acid Oral Solution. My blood serum levels have dropped from 88 to 46 in the past 6 months (had my surgery last August, 2021.) I need to get my levels back up closer to 80, and am have headaches and mania really bad. This could be unique to me, as I am on other meds as well. Feel free to message me or post here if you want to talk more about it.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm on 3 different medications for mental health and am worried about absorbing my meds post-surgery. I'm super stable right now.

Like I mentioned before since hanging around here post sleeve I have seen a lot of people with bipolar who had bypass and they were just fine but now that I am possibly facing a revision to bypass I am looking to hear even more peoples experience. Especially if anyone has experience with vraylar post bypass.

My mom has bipolar and had gastric bypass almost ten years ago. She has always done well, which is encouraging, but definitely chat to your doctor and surgeon. I’ll be getting a gastric sleeve next week and had a really long chat with my surgeon about Wellbutrin and Lexapro (I take both). The first thing he asked was weather or not I was on the Wellbutrin XR (extended release). I agree with another poster that extended release meds should be monitored differently, but only your doctor will truly know. Good luck to you!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
