pre-op sore throat - will they cancel me?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery on Tuesday and, this being winter and all, have developed a sore throat. Does anyone know if the anesthesiologist will cancel my surgery for that? (Because it affects intubation?)

TIA!

Kris

Hi,

I know I got to the hospital for my surgery on 11/26/07 and had junky lungs from an upper respiratory infection & they sent me home. My new surgery date is 12/13. Not sure about a sore throat... Are you lungs clear? I assume a cold is starting? I would OD on airborne & hope for the best....Good luck, I know I was devastated when they sent me home.

I would call your doctor's office and let them know. They should tell you what is best. I have a friend who developed a cold and her surgery was postponed...but better safe than sorry.

my lungs are clear, i'm just a little sniffly (kind of permanently with allergies). but thanks for the "good offense" suggestion - i'll get lots of zinc and Vitamin c for the next few days and see if that helps ...

Hi,

If it were me and all I had was a sore throat (lungs clear, etc) I'd keep my trap shut! You know how hard it is to get scheduled??? But that's just me =)

How funny. My surgery is on 12/20 and I have a sore throat now too. I went straight to my PCP and he found that I have an ear infection and a sinus infection. He put me on antibiotics. My pre-op appt with the surgeon's office is this Thusday. I hope things turn out okay.

Whether or not they take you, don't you think you should wait it out? Think of all that coughing with stomach staples and stitches (internal and external)... sounds like a lot of straining. Better be safe?

I am not sure. I had my surgery yesterday ... the anesthesiologist had me open my mouth wide open and tilt my head back ... she then looked down to see if she can get the breathing tube down. I think that is what their concern will be, whether or not they can get the breathing tube down. I don't remember them ever putting it in or out ... so I think I was out like a light then they put it in and took it out.

I was on Tammiflu (spelling?) over Thanksgiving from being really sick ... I had my surgery 12/7. I think as long as you're well by surgery day it should be okay.

Thanks for all the feedback and advice.

I wasn't planning to tell them about the sore throat, but they would definitely see it for themselves when they went to intubate me.

In any case, I took lots of airborne gummis (lo-carb!) and my sore throat is totally gone. I never developed any other symptoms of cough/cold, so I'm a "go" for tomorrow without worry now.

Thanks again!

Kris

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water. Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
