VSG Week 3 Postop: Able to eat a lot??

Recommended Posts

I'm entering my 3rd week postop and am just starting to incorporate soft foods. I'm just worried that I've felt very little restriction since my surgery. I've also been constantly battling the same old cravings. I've been more or less successful in getting in the total Protein with constant shakes, but I still feel hunger. Today for dinner, I was able to eat an entire bowl of campbell's chicken Soup and then 8 popsicles and was still hungry about an hour later. This was after eating half a cup of mashed potatoes only a few hours earlier. I haven't paid as much attention to weighing out my food so I will try to be better about that, but is this normal?? I want to make healthier choices, but I just keep thinking about all the same old bad foods I want to eat as soon as I'm able. I had hoped this surgery would help me feel sated but I feel the same amount of hunger and feel I could eat the same amount of food as before. Starting to worry...

Its important to measure out your food and I honestly never felt a lot of restriction with soft foods. I did however experience the nausea and cold sweats of dumping syndrome if I was eating too much at one time, the softer thinner the food the easier it will flow through the stomach quicker and cause you issues. Just use a measuring instrument and follow the recommended guidelines for starting out. I found thicker protien oatmeals, scrambled eggs mashed up, mashed cauliflower, greek yogurt with some pureed berries in it, pureed tuna fish and chicken salad things like that helped me recognize when my tummy was nearing its full mark better than the thinner soft foods did. Now I had R&Y tho not sleeve so I may have a bit smaller area to work with but message me anytime if you have any questions or jus wanna talk to a fellow gastric patient :)

Soup and popsicles are liquid so they go right through you - I can't imagine anyone would feel restriction with those. You'll feel it once you start eating dense food.

also, you had nerves cut during surgery - it takes awhile for those to regenerate - so that's another reason people don't feel it right away.

once you move to regular food, you should start feeling restriction. In the mean time, like Kelly said, make sure you're measuring things and eating only what you're supposed to eat.

I had similar worries a few weeks out from surgery. For me personally, I was able to eat purees and soft foods like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and refried Beans very easily and felt "little" restriction. It's my understanding that those soft foods digest faster/easier and so you don't feel the restriction as much.

I have moved onto regular diet in the last couple weeks and I assure you, you will feel the restriction with more solid food. For example, for dinner last night I was able to eat 3 meatballs that were 1.5 TBSP each and not a single bite more. I have been diligent with weighing my food and found that helped in the soft stages to ease my mind about "not being restricted".

Stick with the diet your surgeon recommends and check in with them if you're concerned.

This!! I was so worried at the same point post-op because a container (small) of nonfat plain Greek yogurt, Popsicles, even mashed potatoes to a lesser extent didn't make me full. I kept reading here how people couldn't finish 3 bites of anything post-op and it scared me! I called my surgeon and he said wait until you eat regular food. And he was right.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
