Nov 2020 Post Op Thread

Hi everyone, how are my Nov ppl doing? I'm now 5 days post op VSG. I'm still a little sore, gas is outrageous and the incision by my belly button is killing me!! Other than that, I'm very happy with my decision. I survived the liquid diet and now the surgery, and I'm currently down 18 pounds! My only concern is my immune system during the rise in covid cases. I hate not being able to take Vitamins yet. How is everyone else???

Started pureed/soft food after 2 week pre-op and 2 week post op Protein Shakes diet. Lost 36 lbs. in the past 4 weeks. pureed has been okay so far. Take your time and chew the food even though it is pureed. That helps with brain hunger too I think as much as getting the food mushy for the small pouch. No drinking 15 mins before and 30 mons after meal time. No nausea to speak of so far.

I am 19 days out, and doing better each day! Had a rough start. Down nearly 18 lbs post surgery, but about 37 since October. I am starting to eat more and more things, and it is tolerated well, but still can't eat very much. I am okay with that!

My surgeon wanted me to start my multi at 7 days out instead of 14, since I had some complications. I started the B12 and Calcium at 14.

I'm three days post-op, and things are going okay so far. Still dealing with nausea and hiccups that hurt like the whoa when they pull at my anchor stitch, but I start full liquids today! Hope everyone's recovery goes well!

My wife and I had surgery on 11/11. We are both down 35 lbs since preop. This week our doctor said to start working on purees but also said to try to be a bit more aggressive in testing the waters of full food but obviously to not take it too fast. We were able to eat a few bites of Thanksgiving sides and didn't overindulge. I am surprised that after surgery I do not even crave the Desserts that I previously would have eaten lots of. This surgery has also helped me to know when I have eaten enough. We are also measuring out our portions at 1/4 cup right now and are just barely able to eat that.

Hi all, im 4 weeks post-op and dying for solids!! I am on puree but because of my own texture issues, I find it hard to get full because this texture is aversive. I started adding some solids such as grilled chicken in small pieces and turkey rolls ups, but not sure what else to try.

Has anyone else feel like they 'skipped' through this puree stage or did you stay with it for about 2-3 weeks?

Just mush the food up. It's still solids. I ate cabbage and green Beans and made them mushy and I felt like I was eating real food or you can just chew forever lol. Try fish as it's already soft.

First ever post. I lost approx 20+ lbs pre-op. I had VSG on 11/19. Since surgery, I've lost about 8 pounds in the first week and then Constipation and stall set in, before week 2. I have only lost 2 pounds since then and it fluctuates up and down. 10 lbs total in almost 3 weeks post-op is quite disappointing to me. I was so looking forward to that big drop in the first month! However, I feel good. Gas and nausea were excruciating for the first 2 days, but after that I've felt good and getting better every day. Some days I really lack energy. I'm trying to walk a mile or do a walking video every day. Clothes are getting bigger. I'm struggling with getting my Fluid and protien when I eat too. If I do food, supplement with shakes, and get all my fluid in, while adhering to the "30" rule, I'm consuming something constantly. If I take a break, I get behind and am drinking at midnight. It would be easier just to do protien shakes only, but I enjoy warm and savory after so many sweet shakes. Also, I can eat about 1/2 cup of pureed or a cup of broth or thin Soup. That worries me, because so many others seem to struggle to get in 1/4 cup. My brain is swirling with silly thoughts of the sleeve not being small enough or that I won't lose enough during this honeymoon period... blah, blah, blah! I sure hope the me in 1 year from now laughs at this post and says, "what were you worried about?"

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
