In May 5, 2006 I had a heart attack. I weighed 284 lbs. at the time. After completing cardio rehab, I was able to get below 245 lbs. I had a triple bypass on Jan. 5 2007, but continued to lose weight that year to the upper 230s. Ten years later, I weighed 319 lbs. and went on a protein liquid fast doctor-supervised diet. I lost 60 lbs. Late last year, my daughter begged me to consider weight loss surgery. I want you to be around to see Nate grow up, she said. I began that in early 2020, knowing that I would have to pay for it myself. In order to have the surgery, I had to pass a stress test, have an endoscopy and colonoscopy, which I had put off since the age of 50, and a sleep study. I got the stress test and scopes done before hospitals shut down in early March. COVID was not good for me. I drank and ate my way through it. Things began to turn around in August when I got a call that I could begin the sleep study. I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and have used a CPAP since then. I qualified for the surgery and a date was set. Since my high weight of 365 lbs., I have lost more than 45 lbs., about 38 of it during the two weeks of  pre-op and two weeks of post-op. I am logging my food religiously into My Fitness Pal and doing my best to hit the protein goals without relying on the protein shakes. I suffer from gout flareups and bad ankles and just started exercise this week. Written on Nov. 24 2020, 19 days post-surgery.
