Recommended Posts

I am only a bit over a week out . I thought hunger would be a thing of the past but my stomach is growling as I make hamburger helper for my kids .... is that head hunger ?

So interestingly, I mentioned my constant “head hunger” since week two during my most recent nurse visit (I’m 6 weeks now), and she said that it is not necessarily head hunger. It could very well be real hunger since they can’t guarantee that they got every last cell of ghrelin during the VSG. It’s hard because I don’t trust my own body anymore. Am I hungry? I don’t know. Am I full? Not sure.
Here’s to hoping it gets sorted out soon!

I have found I need to weigh and measure. It takes most people 20 minutes to feel full. You can eat a lot in 20 minutes. So I try to eat slowly and take breaks. You can always eat more later if you are still hungry.

I just had a one month appointment yesterday, and I meet with the fitness advisor and dietician as well as the doctor. The dietitian said that since I limit myself to 4-500 calories a day and have been exercising most days that some of my head hunger could very well be my body truly wanting something. She told me that our plan of 3 meals only is what they want, but that I could add a snack
Like green Beans that are super low in calories and see if that helped. The fitness advisor also said now that I am supposed to add weight training to my cardio that I very well may feel hunger on some days.

What do you all mean by head hunger? Is it a thought that you want to eat something? If that's the case, then its mental, not physical, right?

Right before starting my pre-op diet, I noticed that I thought about food more than I realized. I realized that I would graze some evenings and some weekends. I was not hungry, it was just something I wanted to do. So, I addressed that with a therapist. I could certainly figure out the difference between hunger and thoughts of eating. Sometimes I would have just finished eating something or sometimes I would even be full, but I would go looking for more. I would have a thought about wanting to eat something. To me, the thoughts cant be fixed by WLS. Addressing why I want to graze is better fit for therapy for me.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
