Reflux and Gastric Sleeve

Hello Everyone!
I am waiting for Insurance approval and then I will be scheduling my Gastric Sleeve surgery, hopefully end of September. I currently have some GERD. Some days better than others. I was told when I had my EGD that I have a sliding Hiatal Hernia. I really really don't want to have Gastric Bypass. I know when you have the sleeve you can have more issues with GERD. I have also read that some people have relief from their GERD after sleeve surgery and having their Hiatal Hernia repaired. Can anyone comment on this? Getting nervous!!! Thanks!!!

I was told by my surgeon that the stats are roughly 1/3 of patients stay the same , 1/3 experience relief & 1/3 of patients experience worsening of GERD

Please ask your Surgeon about their statistics and recommendations

I had stress related irregular reflux plus an acidic stomach & suffered terrible hiccups for years & took Nexium as needed. My surgeon told me I would need to take Nexium everyday after surgery which I do. He also said basically the same as Greentealael’s surgeon said: some improve, some worsen some remain unchanged. For 12+ months mine seemed better but it could have been the daily medication. I have noticed I now get a bit of burning in my throat on odd evenings but I don’t have hiccups like I used to or the bad taste in my mouth. I usually take another Nexium when it occurs.

I had a hiatal hernia repair with my sleeve too. I had daily reflux before the surgery but no longer have that issue. I will say I had some reflux yesterday after I over-ate. That was my mistake though.

Sleeve is contradicted for gastric sleeve according to my surgeon also some lady posted on the sleeve forum about regretting sleeve with gerd. Be careful. Its probably more ideal to pick the surgery best fits with your comorbities (gerd diabetes whatever)
