23 Days Post Op-Only 9lb Lost

Recommended Posts

Thankfully I was keeping a good journal and when we discussed how little I was eating she suggested I add healthy fat, salmon, avocado, tuna..etc. Just implemented those things and within two days the scale started moving. Would say I was eating and or drinking between 500-600 cals a day, increased to about 800-900 and just like that the scale is starting to move and I have way more energy and don’t feel like I need a nap every two hours.

The problem with Fiber is it swells up and fills small stomach/pouch. Interferes with nutrient absorption. Bypass patients have very short section of small intestines for absorbing nutrients. So fiber will encase food making it hard to absorb.

I was getting 500-600 calories a day. Dietitian said up to 800 calories. I think that is too much this early postop. Surgeon said 180 minutes of exercise per week. Been walking my dog for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week and 40 minutes mowing the lawn. So I getting step up platform to exercise indoors. It has been 93 degrees 90% humidity so outdoors intolerable.

800 does seem like a lot yet when I was eating between 500-600 I wasn't losing. Guess it depends on your body, weight & metabolism. Sticking with what works. I’m also using my exercise bike 2x a day for at least 20 mins.

I just hit 4 weeks today. Increased my calories this week to 800. Still walking between 2-3 miles a day. Lost a little over 11lbs since surgery. That seems very slow, but surgeon said sometimes your body is still adjusting for a full 6 weeks and he’s seen other patients experience this and then it picks up or remains at a steady weight loss pace longer vs someone who loses a lot right away and the stalls for a long period of time or looses very very slowly after a few months. This is what I keep reminding myself. In the long run, I’m going to get there. As long as I don’t give up, and there are days and hours where I want to, and sometimes when I do - If I keep going and pick myself back up, I’ll get healthy.

Seems like we are in the same boat. My friend and I had our surgeries on same day. She dropped 25lbs almost instantaneously where I’ve been stalled. Was really stressed and felt like giving up for a while. Since focusing on me and understanding my body structure is totally different, things have really turned around. Glad I was able to stop worrying and get moving! Now I’m truly on the losers bench. Better late than never!

I did NOT appreciate dietitian's snide remark that I "needed to get with program before my restriction doesn't work anymore." I showed her my diet diary and photos of contents of fridge and cupboards (only Fairlife shakes). I live alone and staying at home for 3 months due to covid. I honestly think she thought I must be pigging out on junk food. Really made me mad but I did not respond anymore. Why do dietitians say things like that when I am clearly "with the program."

THIS!!!!!! I am so tired of medical professionals not believing me when I say "I ate 1200 cal/day for 3 months and lost only 3 lbs". I did not cheat. Yes that really happened. I logged every morsel I put in my mouth. Just because you can't figure out why my body is not losing doesn't mean I am cheating.

I was on medically supervised diet for 5 months before surgery. I lost 30 pounds easily. That is why weight loss soooooo slow from day one postop has been frustrating. But I remind myself that my BMI has dropped from 44 to 36.5 and weight down from 245 to 191. I am off two blood pressure meds and off statin. My blood sugar and A1C are normal so am no longer pre-diabetic. So overall, I am a lot healthier now regardless of what the scale says. I couldn't walk for exercise before surgery because severe low back pain and sciatica. Now I can walk all I want. And my jean size is now 16 (no plus sizes anymore). People who start out with much higher BMI and a lot more weight tend to lose a lot faster. And we are all different genetically and metabolically. So as long as I am doing what I'm supposed to, the scale doesn't matter right now.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
