Nutritionist thinks I should be eation 1000 cals a day!

Recommended Posts

Looking for input and opinions from those who've been there. I'm exactly 5 months post op. I had severe complications from March til July which prevented me from eating much. So, I'm progressing slowly on my diet. I saw the Nut for the first time yesterday. I average between about 600 and 850 calories a day. Mostly 600-700. Which feels adequate and satisfying. Nut says in one breath not to track my calories, and in another breath that my goal for now should be 1000 calories a day!! I really don't think I could eat that much with my restriction, and I'm sure I'd gain weight. Now, I know she's the professional, but I live in this body!! What do you all think? Up my calories, or stay the course with what I'm doing? Thanks!

By the way, for those wondering, I'm 57. 5'3", and have lost just over 60 pounds with 50 more to go.

I started losing weight when I upped my calories. I guess I had been in "starvation" mode at 600 calories

I didn't go over 500-600 until after I decided to stop losing weight (at around 7 months post op)

Though I remember my NUT telling me before surgery that I should be getting 800 cals by 2-3 months postop. Which I didn’t...and she wasn’t overly concerned.

Whatever you decide to do, try keep your team informed. I do many things that contradict instructions my NUT initially gave me, but I always let her know when we meet.

I didn't go up over 1000 until I was about a year out. A lot of people are in the 600-800 range that you mentioned.

as far as not tracking, that's a recipe for disaster for a lot of us. I'm over four years out, and I still track. I know if I quit doing it for more than a few days, my weight would start to creep up. It happened a billion times when I was pre-surgery - I'd quit monitoring, and I'd eventually gain all the weight back. No thanks.

my dietitian wants me to quit counting calories and try "intuitive eating". I just smile and nod. "Intuitive eating" is what got me up over 300 lbs. Sorry - not doin' it.

I’m just two weeks post op and had my diet advancement class today. Our NUT also said we should aim for 1000 cals/day! No way I could hit that yet.

Thanks for the helpful replies, ya'll! I don't see Nutritionist for another 3 months, but do see surgeon's PA in a month, so will discuss with her. She's always been on board with how I'm eating.

OMG yes! YES! HELL YEAH!!! (am I yelling? cuz it feels like it...)

I could have written this myself. I just smile and nod. Smile and nod. LOL. My sweet spot for losing was and is 650-850. Truthfully, it's on the 650 side of it. My BMR is only around 1250cals base. So a 500 cal deficit? LOL, is right there in the ballpark.

I think if you can pack the nutrition into 600-800 cals, there is no NEED to add extra crap in just to mystically up your calories. Now, if you squander that 600-800 cal window on junk food and highly processed, calorie dense, nutrient bankrupt foods? Then all bets are off. But if you focus on lean dense Protein, low glycemic veggies, a bit of healthy fat, and a bit of low glycemic fruit here or there? Man...you're square, dear!

Can you give examples of healthy fats and veggies and fruits to be eating?

I eat about 700 calories a day, 10 months out. At a year "they" say I should be at 1100. No way. I can't physically eat anything else. Plus, I HAVE to eat high Protein because of my exercise routine, and much of that isn't very high calorie. If you're still losing, stay the course, imo. I don't track anymore because I literally eat the same thing virtually every single day. So, every day in my diary would be identical. lol.

Dannon light and fit yogurt for Breakfast, Chomps beef/turkey stick for snack, BariatricPal Lite Entree for lunch, some miscellaneous Protein snack (like Kay's protein pretzels) for snack, then nonfat cottage cheese or a turkey patty for dinner. If I go out to eat, I get a salad. That's it. Very rarely is it anything else. Sometimes a hardboiled egg. Sometimes a few blueberries. That's about it, though.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
