protein shakes make me puke

My surgery is July 8. I just started trying to drink a protein shake a day, just to help with the transition. The first day, I drank a full shake and subsequently threw it up. Today, I drank half a shake, felt like throwing up, but I didn't. I have tried Premier shakes (bananas and cream and caramel). Any suggestions on what to try? I'm getting nervous that all shakes will make me sick.

  • I got an unflavored soy isolate, mixed it with water and crystal light. It’s not wonderful, but my stomach can tolerate it. Only 20g of protein per serving, but at least I can stomach it.

I like the Core Power protein shakes much better, they are not as cloyingly sweet and not as dense. You might try thinning your shake with water or skim milk if it's the consistency that's bothering y

  • Sometimes, with no rhyme or reason, milk/dairy negatively affects me. I’m thinking of trying something lactose free. I’m ok with the consistency, it’s just about 30 minutes after, I have a horrible st

I used to live to mix the banana and caramel together and after surgery I suddenly couldn't stomach them. I'm not lactose intolerant. My pouch just didn't like it. I'm now drinking clear premier protein shakes. I don't love them but I don't hate them and I can tolerate them. Also you can freeze them into popsicles [emoji4]

I would call your dietician. She should have some answers for you.

I have been drinking ready nutrician clear protein drinks and have tried genepro unflavored powder. It's all gross to me now after surgery. I have tried ensure, premier, ripple, core, bolthouse nectur......it all has a weird after taste now. [emoji53]

in the literature they give you after surgery they talk about drinking 4 ounce of protein shake made up of powder or.. or already in a bottle is that how much at one time you are supposed to have? i have been trying to sip all 11 fluid ounces within 30 minutes..and yes they all taste like crap after the surgery,,,

Right after surgery they want you to drink 4 ounces in 1 hour. Space it out. 11 ounces in 30 min is a lot in my opinion.
Drink what you can. Some people have issues drinking. I had no pain immediately after surgery. I was also very well medicated so that might be why. I couldn’t stand the protein shakes. The first couple were good just because I was so hungry but a week in I was going nuts and when I finally got to soft food I’m drinking as few as possible because I can’t stand them either. Think of it as “taking your medicine”. Lol. I agree on the clear. They’re much less thick and sickening. Water down and put on ice??
Thank you for the kind words. I thought people were going to crucify me for being so close to surgery. I am doing this and I am not going to cheat again. Surgery is 10 days away. Wow
Think of it this way, the liquid diet is shrinking your liver, making more room for them to do the surgery, its helping your body prepare for your journey. Dont self sabatoge. You CAN do this. Good luck!

I like Unjury or Syntrax Nectar powders mixed with unsweetened almond milk. I tried powder mixed with Water and it was vile!!

This is what I’m current doing! Although I feel like I’m dying, this was the only protein I could tolerate . The Vanilla flavor and unsweetened almond milk has been pleasant
Make your own protein shake, because like you all of the ready made ones make me sick also. So I use the unflavored Isopure Protein powder and make my own shake with fruit and yogurt-like a smoothie.
