Dry skin? Leathery feeling? Skin not as supple as before?

Recommended Posts

So it’s only been a little while out with my surgery. My date was on March 11th and I don’t think I’ve been getting enough Water.< br />
At work I used to take breaks to fill up my water bottle and get in at least 2 kms of walking a day. Now that I’m not at work, I’ve been lazy and I’ve noticed that I haven’t been drinking enough water.

My skin feels itchy and rash like to day, so I decided to try a mud mask.

That tended to try my skin out even more.

If anyone has been having this issue what have you found to be helpful for you?

I had dry skin also in the 1st 8 months after my surgery. Lotion, lotion, lotion! Don’t take a shower or bath every day if you can. Don’t use soap on your whole body either. Just your underarms & private parts. Soap washes away your skins oil & you need that oil right now!

Dehydration can cause dry, leathery, itchy skin. So, if you feel like you're not getting enough Water, you probably aren't. Start tracking so that you know for sure.

Possibility of dehydration aside, I agree with toodlerue above. Not uncommon to have dry skin in the first few months post op. Nothing wrong with showering every other day. I used BioOil after showers. I still do. It keeps my skin baby-soft. It also helped my surgical scars fade. *It's not a scar miracle cure, but honestly I can barely see them anymore. Good luck!

You really need to stay hydrated. You don't want to end up in the hospital. Try sipping every 15 minutes. And use lotion.

If I have the heat on I sleep with a humidifier in the room. It helps with dry skin, dry throat, etc. Eucerin Skin Calming Body Lotion works well for me. I take baths but I use body oil like Neutrogena Body Oil after. And I drink at least 64 oz. a day. I use a 16 oz. Water bottle and make sure I drink at least 4.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
