STRUGGLING with liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I was sleeved on 1/28/19, and I will begin the soft food phase next Wednesday, 2/13/19. I’m a week into the liquid phase and it is frustrating me to no end. I am getting my fluids and Protein in just fine, I meet/exceed my goal every day. I still feel so WEAK! It’s not even that I’m hungry, or even actually craving any crazy binge-food, I’m just so effing tired of not eating anything. I’m tired of Water and crystal light, I get nauseous when I think about my next Protein Shake, and I am sick of broth. I don’t even want unhealthy foods, I just want a couple bites of salmon! Or a salad!

I also am not at the point where I can go back to the gym and do cardio and yoga again (pre op I was exercising to the point of sweating 6 days a week) and that is driving me crazy too. I’m getting really frustrated and borderline depressed and I just want to feel good and energized again. The things that I would normally do for timely gratification are all gone, food (obviously unhealthy), exercise, and taking a bath/soaking in the jacuzzi at the gym are all not allowed right now. I know I’m only a week+ away from the soft food diet and hopefully from being able to soak, but it feels like an eternity. I’m hoping that some of you guys can share your experiences and how you got through. Thanks!

Hi!

When I had my surgery, I went through a lot of the same things you are talking about. Just remember that this is a process... a journey. One day, one step, at a time. Are you taking your Vitamins like you should? You may need more Vitamin B12 and d3. B12 will give you more energy and d3 will help with the depression. Also, you may be slightly anemic and need more Iron. All of these can cause the symptoms you talked about.

Once you get the vitamins you need, along with remembering to keep focusing on your goal, and maintaining your convictions... you will be ok and be ready to go on with the next phase just fine.

Remember, too, this was a major surgery. Your body needs time to heal. Give it the time it needs. If you're tired, rest. sleep is the best way to heal.

Hope this all helps. I'm here if you want talk. [emoji3]

Thanks a lot for the support. I’m taking my Multivitamin but perhaps I need more than that can provide... I’ll talk to my nutritionist about it. I know that I’m okay and it’s all going to be okay I just feel stuck in a rut.

I am on day 15 of my 21 day liquid stage (my doc requires 21 long days). I am experiencing the same ups and downs. The weakness and Protein Shakes are the worst. I have been dreaming about salad too. I have been making the broth spicy and it helps a bit. You are not alone and can do it!!!

Listen, I know how it is feeling stuck in a rut! I had a very hard time with the liquid diet too. I ate a lot (I mean A LOT) of Jello. I made all kinds. All different flavors, all different ways, and I ate that constantly. I hate broth. I chose to eat that instead and popsicles, and the shakes.

When I was able to add soft food, I ate a lot of baby food. Even when I was able to add some more solids. It was easier than pureeing it myself, and most of it wasn't that bad.

What about trying yoghurt, jelly and custard?

i would consider yoghurt and custard more puree or soft food unless 'watered' down to be more of a liquid consistency. Jelly wasn't on my liquid list that I can recall, but as a large number of people post op seem to be using on their liquid stage I assume it must be on a number of other post op guidelines.

Thin Yogurt, jelly and custard were allowed on my liquid diet.

If I never see another Protein Shake in my life it will be too soon. Was so happy to be able to stop drinking them

It seems as though my liquid diet is a little more stringent than that, however my soft food diet allows much more food than just the consistency of baby food. I’m definitely looking forward to a nice piece of (fork mashed -_-) fish when I can.

Thanks for all of your advice, I’m just taking it one day at a time at this point.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
