magnesium citrate. extreme pain. help.

Recommended Posts

On recommendation from the bariatric nurse, I drank some magnesium citrate because I had not had a bowel movement in 14 days. I cannot truly explain the pain I experienced. I thought my stomach had ruptured and considered calling 911. It felt like an open flame was held to my stomach. It's been well over an hour and while the pain has dissipated some, I am still in pain. Can anyone recommend anything to soothe this? The office is closed and I don't think it justifies an emergency visit. Has anyone experienced this? This was definitely in the top 3 most painful things I've experienced in my life. On the upside... I did use the bathroom, profusely. I did spit up a lot of saliva and vomited a very, very small amount of the laxative almost immediately. Now I'm just laying down. Water and dairy isn't doing much to quell the burning.

You just gotta ride the wave now. Pre-op Mag Citrate liquid was my go-to. But post surg, even 1 or 2 oz goes through like Sherman through Georgia. So fast. So painful. Fetal position rocking and moaning terrible. :( Once it's in you, nothing is gonna stop it until you get all the crap out of you--literally.

Sorry. :( Hope it eases quickly. Make sure to get your fluids in. Keep trying to take sips of Water. Now the key is to keep everything open and not allow yourself to go 14 days. That's just wrong. At 3 days no BM, I'm formulating a plan for day 4. But my recipe so far is:

17g Miralax

3 Colace

11g whole psyllium dissolved in 2 glasses of iced tea

1/2c yogurt

1 GG brancrisp cracker with 1tbsp almond butter before bedtime

lots of leafy greens and broccoli and cruciferous veg

100oz water

DAILY. Every. Damn. Day.

I'm finally having lovely fluffy movements every day that I follow those rules. It was Rosemary's Baby bad before that.

Omg it was so awful. It's been 2 hours and it still hurts. I take Colace 3 times a day and Miralax daily. At Day 6 I am told to try suppositories, which don't work. Senna tea USUALLY does the trick, but didn't this time; I drank it twice. Leading me to here... curled up in a ball wishing for a swift death.

Why the hell would he recommend something that was carbonated like that!? I noticed a small amount of fizz but figured it was okay since he said it was. Got 5 oz down. NEVER.AGAIN. I am peeing from the wrong place now. TMI.

Do you think mineral oil is okay? I am eating roughage now, too. My Water is good for where I'm at... about 60 to 70oz a day and increasing. I was told no Fiber since I had the hernia repair. I am still shook over what I just experienced.

Oh my goodness, I hope you feel better soon! I have found Colace to be useless, but Milk of Magnesia, while disgusting, does work really well, maybe try that next time?

I second milk of magnesia.

If you google "sugar free gummi bears" you will find that they have incredible laxative effects. I'm not suggesting you make them a regular staple, but on the "it's been 3 days" day, maybe eat some of them and let the bears work their magic.

Whatever you do, eat them in small quantities!

Those bears are evil. The stomach pain that goes with the laxative effect is indescribable.

So I sent a message to the nurse this morning like WTFFFFFFF. And he said he didn't know magcitrate was carbonated and had never been told by anyone it hurt them before. UHHHH. Yeah dude.

He recommended I take Milk of Mag or the MagCitrate pills next time. Smh. I asked about Milk of Mag in the office and he said to do MagCitrate. Yeah, never again. Today it feels like I was punched in the gut still.

I take a magnesium citrate pill (so no carbonation) every day and it helps quite well. I take it before bed and in the morning I'm ready to go.

It's been 6 days since my magcitrate horrorshow and I haven't used the bathroom since. I've since been diligent with my 3x day Colace, 1x day Miralax, and added in a mag citrate pill in the evenings. Took some milk of magnesia about 6 hours ago to no effect. I've tried everything. I give up! Not sure if it's safe to take senna AND milk of mag the same day? I gotta get something movin'. I think this may be the most annoying thing to deal with.

I can taste it 100% if mixed in cold stuff. I heat it up with hot tea now... dissolves much better and the tea masks the "imaginary" flavor.

14 hours later and the M.o.M. worked! The bottle says within 6 hours... well, it took 14 but I am okay with that. So much smoother than the liquid magcitrate and no painful side effects. Thank Jeebus!!!!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
