How many calories a day should I be eating?

At stage 3 I decided to throw out the nutritionists diet and created my own.

My nutritionist and doctor are 100% on board with my diet. I'm not on my own...everything is monitored and approved. When I was selecting a bariatric surgery team, one of my criteria was to find a team that did not stress keto-only and had more flexability with people who prefer vegetarian diets. My research university serves an international population that has a lot of culturally vegan and vegetarian people.....so my dietitians are more experienced with adapting a healthy bariatric diet to different diets. Both my doc and nutritionist are enthusiastic about my choice of mayo Clinic Diet, (they also like Mediterranean, DASH and Japanese...which are similar)...so we have a lot of options:)

I think it's important to get professional input, support and help through the process.

My surgeon has his patients see a nutritionist for the post op diet and he has a very basic guideline of the stages himself. I was onboard with the nutritionist up until I was asked to eat highly processed food in stage 3. I need to find a different nutritionist, but until then I’ve been following Dr. Matthew Weiners post op diet. I am steadily losing weight, I have no issues and feel really good.

Look around for a nutritionist who does vegetarian patients after sleeve. They're out there and will have more flexibility:) Best wishes and congrats on your progress!

I'm getting a bypass after being sleeved 4.5 years. My downfall was eating "normal" but smaller portions. If I couldn't lose weight before surgery eating less, why did i think I could eat normal after the sleeve? I lost 115 and have gained 50. I will be super strict with this one. I will prolong the liquid phase as long as possible, with nutritionist in agreement. Three Premier Protein chocolate shakes and 2 Premier Protein Clear will meet calorie, Fluid, and protein requirements.

My practice's plan is 700-800 calories daily for life.

My portions are still correct and I don't snack. I dont eat and drink at the same time. I haven't had soda since before surgery. I'm just not someone who can lose weight by simply eating less. I won't even be trying to find out if I'm someone who will experience dumping, I will assume I will!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
