It’s happening! 3 month countdown!

On 8/27 I have my surgical and psych consults as well as my nutrition class, EKG, and blood work! If I’m given the green light that day, I can schedule surgery for anytime in the following 30 days, approx 9/25. I will find out at my consult about any pre-op diet requirements. I’m so excited and nervous and anxious but excited!
What was your “final meal” before surgery (outside of strict diet guidelines)?

I'm having VSG on July 17, and start the pre-op food regimen 7/7. I had pizza last week and popcorn recently, saying a temporary toodleloo for the next few months. I will probably have a little ice cream, too. I'm enjoying strawberries and freezing them, too, as I cannot eat seeds after surgery for a few months. I began Decaf coffee today. I got off diet pop 5 yrs ago, quit "Mexican Coke" (Coke made with cane sugar, not corn syrup) in January. I don't drink my calories and I don't miss soda pop. I can eat processed foods in very limited amounts due to food sensitivities, and make my own food wth mostly organic ingredients. I wonder if I will miss any particular foods. I'm surprised it is not hard giving up sweet stuff, for the most part. I make my own version of Zing: 2T Sweetleaf Stevia + 1 c sugar. 1/2 t. = 1T sweetness for just 8 calories and will use that with Lorann Flavorings to make beverages and generic Jello.

I, too am both nervous and excited! It seems like nothing happens and nothing happens and then everything happens! What foods do you think you will just have to miss for a while?

Hi! Congrats on your upcoming surgery! 2 major things I’m going to miss are carbonated Water like Polar Ice and La Croix (I don’t drink regular soda) and my sweet coffee creamer (I already drink Decaf only—caffeine intolerant). I have approximately 3 months so I figure I’ll give up the sweet Creamer at end of July, the carbonated drinks at end of August. pizza is a huge trigger food for me. I will probably eat enough to hate it by the time I start any required pre-op diet. General sweets like candy I will be okay with not having as a life rule. I’m better with cold turkey than “just a tiny taste”. Sounds like you are on your way! You’ve got this! I think my final “big tummy” meal will be a Mexican food feast.

Make sure you don't cheat on your pre-op liquid diet, your surgeon will know lol! I had McDonald's my last meal, I don't even really like McDonald's but I panicked didnt know what to get and I liked the fries, I should've had burger king (which I don't like that much either) but I had to start my liquid diet the following morning and I had my Boston cream donuts before. I cheated kinda with my pre op diet and had a bagel and threw myself out of ketosis :(

Totally! I can’t wait until I start it. I feel like it will make me feel so much better. Lately (might be psychological) food just makes me feel icky. Nothing that was awesome is that great anymore. I feel like it’s the beginning of a transformation from living to eat to eating to live! I will not be cheating myself at all in this. I have 2 months until my pre-op appointment with surgery to be about a month after that 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

That's how I felt. And after you have surgery it is just eating to live, and remember you said that lol! It's definitely a transition, I'm 10 weeks out, everyday is still an adventure. I'm so glad I made this decision even though it's not just a surgery and eating little bites, but you sound ready and that's (in my opinion) is one of the most important parts. After 12 weeks (my clinic counts your weight loss from your 2 week liquid diet on) I'm down 49 pounds. Went into the hospital in a 3XL too and today I'm wearing an XL. It will be an adventure for you, but awesome!

I love it! Great job! I’m so excited to do this. I’m totally terrified too but yeah. Lol. I was just reading a post about how everyone’s doctor is different I. Regards to pre-op diet and how some don’t even require it. I sure hope mine does. I can use any advantage I can get! I’m in. 4-5x now and hope by my next birthday (June 2019) to be in a 2-3x. I miss shopping at Target and Kohl’s and not having to hunt for super plus size! I miss those cute clearance racks!

Ummm if I dropped almost 3 sizes in less than 2 months, you'll be WAY smaller than a 2X girl! You'll be in the misses section! I cried when I put on a size 20. My butt has yet to get the memo but I've gone one size down. I can't wait to say goodbye to the plus size section for good!

Yes, I love this non-interest in food these days. Unless I miss a mealtime and get really hungry. Then all bets are off and I seek out anything that requires no prep - all things I shouldn't have anyway. So, planning ahead will be critical for me, and eating whether hungry or not. They caution against buying lots of clothes as you keep going down. I bought just one top in the next size down, and one 2 sizes down, and one 3 sizes down. Sale items I really really loved. Hang them over the door for viewing and inspiration. At this point I cannot imagine fitting into any of them. After July 17 I may imagine differently.

I haven’t put any thought towards prepping a final meal because I want the transition to be easy as possible and not burdensome. Try to slowly make your transition now and practice healthy choices. A slippery slope is a horrible trap. Best of luck to you !!

I won’t. Be prepping a final meal. Once I have my pre-op I will spend the next 3 weeks prepping for pre-post surgery like buying shakes, Protein waters, etc. my last meal will be at a restaurant, because I LOVE eating out and it will involve chips and salsa and guacamole and a huge plate of fajitas. Then the next day I will start my pre-op diet and journey to my new life. I’ll be making other changes until then like giving up the bubbly Water, sweet coffee creamer, fast food, etc. I don’t want those in my life any more after surgery.

Very wise, Tropi. Weaning bit by bit away from stuff is the best plan, gives your system time to adjust and do some healing even before surgery. I won't have a Final Meal either, or I'll feel I dramatically fell off a cliff and my entire system - mind, body, spirit will be in chaos and turmoil. I want smooth sailing on this journey.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
