VSG with Hiatal Herinia Repair - A little concerned...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. My name is Mike, I'm 34, about 422lbs and I am scheduled for surgery on the 28th of June (two weeks!). I'm a bit concerned because I will be having the hiatal hernia repair along with the sleeve.

My wife had the sleeve last year, and everything went smooth. She had a lot of pain and naseau immediately following the surgery, but that went away after a couple of days. She was then on liquids for a few weeks, then solids as normal. Her surgeon didn't order a pre-op diet. She ate as she pleased right up to the day before surgery.

I chose the same surgeon. During the EGD, he discovered the hiatal hernia and gastritis. He told me he'd fix the hernia during the sleeve surgery. I asked if anything would be different and he shrugged it off as being no big deal, and nothing different. But searching online for stories from others, it would seem there is a difference. The recovery period is longer and so is the liquid diet. Some folks have horror stories of how the hernia fix made the difficult task of staying on top of Water and Protein much more difficult.

Anyone here on BP have an experience with VSG + hiatal hernia repair? I'd love to hear more outcomes from folks. Any tips or concerns I should address with my surgeon during my pre-op appointment next week?

Thanks!

Mike

Band to Sleeve.....I had two hernias and got a sleeve. I was at work a week later, you'll be fine.

I just had VSG and Hiatal hernia repair June 11th. I think the only difference is having one incision right under your sternum (just below the bra line on a woman). My biggest issue was the gas pain which gets better each day. I was able to get all my Water and Protein today. Breathing deep hurt initially, but I think that was related to the gas. I walked over 7000 steps the first night, but I still can't lay down flat, so I am guessing walking helps, but time plays its part as well. Each day I feel better than the last and keep forgetting it has only been 3 days since my surgery.

I’m 10 days post op vsg with haital hernia repair. Only difference was a little tightness from repair. It’s important to do breathing exercises post op. You’ll be a little more sore than someone who didn’t have a hernia. No difference with diet from anyone else. At least as per my doctor

I had a huge hernia, where my stomach was bulging and stuck up through my diaphragm. All the surgeon does is pull it back down, and tighten the diaphragm with a few stitches. It's easy peasy for them. My recovery was flawless. No pain, no nausea. Etc.

My surgeon told me it's not possible to even feel it. Tightness comes from swelling and overall trauma to the area, not the actual hernia repair. He described how new sleeves are swollen and the inside is about as big as a pencil at first.

He basically said who has ever had the sleeve with hernia repair, and the sleeve without a hernia repair, and was able to compare the two? Probably no one. If two people have different experiences, it's probably not the hernia repair that makes their experience different.

How are you feeling now? I’m hoping that you are feeling better by now. I didn’t have a hernia repair but I did have my gallbladder out. This morning was the first time I didn’t wake up with terrible acid reflux.

I had one of the smoothest, fastest recoveries i've heard about. Few pain meds. One night in the hospital. Ate 1000 calories at 3 weeks. Never missed a day of 60+ ounces of Water. A VERY easy recovery compared to most.....and I had a large hiatal hernia repaired.

You should watch the surgery on Youtube. Fixing the hernia isn't very complicated. No biggie at all.

You will be fine:)

Thanks all for the replies. I'm glad to know those who also had the hernia repair didn't have such a terrible time.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
