Feeling like a failure

I've been feeling like such a failure recently. I'm five months post op and have only lost 37 pounds.

Sometimes i feel like why did i do this ? Pre op i really felt on such a high that I'm finally gonna get everything I've been waiting for my whole life and now i just feel let down and disappointed.

I'm eating and exercising really well so i dont know what im doing wrong ?????

Without knowing your height it is tough to see whether this is in line with expectations... after all, 37 pounds is a couple of pounds a week, consistently - good on most diets! What is your goal? Your bmi? Your surgery type?

And share with us a bit about your eating habits...

Folks on here know a lot about weight loss predictions for people of various start/goal weights, etc. I reckon you’ll get good stuff from some here, if you share a little more with them.......

I had the gastric sleeve on a regular 12/12/17
I was never the kind of person that ate the whole time i actually didnt have such bad eating habits (obviously not the best ) but weight is something I've been battling with since a very young age

Hello,

In my humble experience, raw BMI is a good ballpark, but not the be all end all of measurements. Before undergoing surgery myself, I've talked with several people who went through the same ordeal, and felt like they were stalling despite following all orders to a T. Thing is, one of those guys looked buff as hell.

All body types are different, and some endomorphs lose fat by building muscle. Sure, his BMI said almost obese, but his body fat % was in the low end of normal. He didn't see that, because some people are so focused on weight alone that they develop a dysmorphic syndrome.

Not saying that's your case, but maybe that's an avenue you should consider and examine. In any case, everything has a solution, and you're still in the "honeymoon" phase of weight loss, so there's much room for improvement if you happened to veer a bit off course.

Believe me, just considering the fact that you may be a "failure" at this stage, tells me that you are miles away from being one. Key word: Self awareness. Stand tall, trooper.

What are you eating in a day. Post some sample menus please with daily totals if possible--also how many cals per day? Also, what volume is a meal? And are you still drinking Protein Drinks? How many meals/snacks/times do you eat a day? Are you drinking alcohol? Do you drink/eat at the same time? Are you taking supplements? Do you exercise?

I understand your frustration, sometimes we place too much focus and importance on one thing that will certainly make you happy if fixed. IMHO its never just the one thing that if fixed, will fix everything. And thats where the disappointment comes from. I would suggest measuring your success not only by what you lose but also by what you gain as well. And please try to remember that your lifes purpose is not losing weight. Losing weight will enhance your life and allow you to focus on other things

The only thing you're doing wrong....is lacking patience.

If you currently weigh 182, and you've got 12 months of surgery effect to continue to lose weight..

If you lose 3 pounds a month...you'll get down to 146 by the end of 18 months (the time frame they say surgery helps to promote weight loss)

You're getting there slower....because you're getting closer.

Have patience and stay the course.

I totally agree with the others -- and I also play the game of calculating what I need to lose a month/week to reach my goals (both reasonable and stretch). Keep on truckin'!

Also, if you lose the average amount of 70% EBW, and assuming a goal weight of 130#, you will reach 156#. This means you are 60% there at 5 months!!

I’m not a big fan of using “amount of weight lost” as a metric to track success, since we all have vastly different starting points. BMI is a good marker for a health baseline, but I’d probably be wary of that one as a direct comparative statistic too.

Percentage of starting weight lost feels like a more reliable, comparative baseline for us to use. If I’m reading your stats right, you’ve lost 17% of your starting weight - that’s VERY successful. Calculating the percentage of weight you need to lose to hit goal seems like a good one too. But comparing directly to another individual on these boards is anecdotal (posters self-selecting for success) and confirmation bias will get you. Avoid it.

And, not to point out the obvious, but if you started at 218, you were at a lower weight than very many of the people on here, and it's expected that your loss would be slower than someone who, for example, started at twice what you did.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
