Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

Almost quit on Day 1 of my pre-op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I often see people talking about Optifast, is it sold in Big Box stores, GNC, health foods stores, or only from your Bariatric surgeon? A few seem to love it, most tolerate it, and some loathe it. ,, Just Wondering?[emoji54]

It’s only sold at Bariatric surgeons offices or dietitian offices. Unless you want to roll the dice on eBay....

So just wondering about how many calories you all are consuming throughout the day? I'm only getting about 700 and I've lost 6 pounds in 3 days. At this rate I feel I'm going to lose 30 pounds before surgery. [emoji53]

I was told to get around 800-900 calories with at least 80 grams of Protein a day. I’ve been on my pre op diet for 8 days and I’ve lost 8 pounds. I’m pushing Water HARD drinking at least 90 oz a day. So I know I’m water heavy. My work clothes are MUCH looser than 8 pounds would suggest. And I pee ALL THE TIME.
How much protein are you getting a day? And are you only doing liquids? For how long?

Had a proti Soup [emoji502] for lunch. I made it with very low hopes expecting a light broth consistency low salt not much flavor but was pleasantly surprised. Proti soup has 90 cals and 15 grams of Protein and looked just like a Lipton chicken noodle and tastes great Incase anyone wants to try it. Weird how it has less cal and protein than my shake but the warmth made it so filling and satisfying. And all the mixing and being over the stove had me feeling like I was cooking a mean lol [emoji23] I needed that.

Is it suitable for the first week of clear liquid post-op diet? Cause if it is, I’m about to hit up Amazon prime!

How is everyone else doing? Today was my best day so far. I really got the hang of this (knock on wood). I think I’ll be fine the next 7 days. Only thing I’ve noticed is that I find myself being bored or just with extra time and feeling very present. I guess I used to eat when I was bored and disappear to a diff dimension while doing so because now I’m like huh what did I do before

Yo-Yo Girl from New York City

Its going well. I'm glad your doing better. The crazy thing is I have to remind myself to eat because all the Water I drink keeps me full and no more head hunger to remind me to eat.
Everyone keep up the good work.!!

I’m going to be honest here. When I’m home, I’m good. I actually have to set reminders to tell me to eat that shake, bar, Soup whatever. But I was back at work today and it was ROUGH. I actually left early (thank god im the GM AND buying the place in July so I have the freedom to do that!) It’s an escape room, so we’re all crammed in one little back room in front of computers and tv screens all day. All the guys were bringing in burgers and fries and all sorts of fast food. I 100 percent couldn’t deal with it and left an hour earlier than planned.
I had bad eating habits. Duh. [emoji23] But I was NEVER a grazer. I was that person who was so slammed everyday that I had time to eat one meal and I had to eat it quick. Like light speed. So all of that food is actually making me physically hungry. I never really got that head hunger thing until day 1-2 of the pre-op diet. But I do get legit hungry. Like rumbly in the tumbly hungry. (Yep. I did just quote poo the bear [emoji23]).
Basically, today SUCKED. But tomorrow is a short day and will be my last day at work. I’ve decided to take 4 weeks off after surgery as I can’t imagine dealing with the food pushed in my face all day long until I get into the puréed stage.
Hopefully everyone else is having an easier time.

Hi everyone. I have been on the preop liquid diet for 12 days but have not met my target weight. I have not cheated at all. Could there be a reason this is happening?

Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Are you drinking a lot of Water? From what I’ve read on here it’s actually not super unusual for some people to actually gain a little weight if they’re drinking lots of water.
How much have you lost in 12 days and what is your target weight? If you don’t mind me asking that is.

Well I sat here reading everyone's post and so nervous cause I start my pre-op on Monday. I have to do 2 weeks of pure liquid, so the only real chewing I can do is sugar free gum and I have it ready to go! I'm nervous about it but listening to you ladies seem to help calm me a little with hope that it gets easier after a few days... I typically don't have a problem getting Water in so I'll definitely be doing that but my doctor only allows 2 premier shakes a day which is spread out to 4 times a day and it's split with fairlife fat free milk. So I can have half a 11oz bottle of shake with 2/3 cup of milk 4 times and then the rest is all broth, sf Jello and sf Popsicles.... Anyways best wishes to everyone and I'll be checking in....

Well my shakes give me 39 grams of protein and I drink 2 a day. Then I get one meal of 3 to 4 oz of lean protein and non starchy vegetables. That has given me about 24 grams of protein so I'm getting over 100 grams per day. My instructions said to drink at least 64 oz of water... and I'm definitely not used to it. I just don't think about drinking water but I've done really good and have had my 64 oz everyday since starting the pre op diet. I think my body may be getting used to the water because at first I was going pee like every hour lol but now not so often. It's a 14 day diet and my last day is actually only Clear Liquids and a bowel cleanse.... [emoji15]

I was told 60 grams of protein a day max (they actually changed the preop liquid diet at my office last month— it used to be 30grams!!)

I’m on day 5 (OMG surgery is on Wednesday!!!!!!!), and I’m down 8 pounds — I’ll take it.

My headaches are gone, but I’m really tired. I’ve found myself getting shaky sometimes throughout the day, but if I eat something with protein, that resolves itself. I tried to go cold turkey on caffeine this week, but caved in on day 2 after a massive Migraine. I’m drinking about 1/4 of the amount of coffee that I’m used to, so I hope that will help post op.

Hows everyone else doing?? Can we start a support group somewhere to check in with each other? Facebook? Is that allowed??

Hi, the Optifast 800

I believe that if you are following your pre-op diet then you’ll be okay. Even if the numbers on the scale aren’t shooting down what matters is that your liver is shrinking and losing fat. I been watching fat doctor (on YouTube) and I realize how important it is for the liver to shrink and not be fatty. It literally gets in the way and has to be pushed to the side to make our stomach accessible. So if you’re following it to the T I think you’re fine.

How is everyone doing? Today I’m feeling good. I do get tired a lot or maybe I’m just bored but I’m no longer miserable and that’s more than I could ask for. Also for once I felt full after drinking my shake and my Water, I had to sit still and really concentrate on what I was feeling to believe it. Full? Me? How? Lol but there I was satisfied. I think as the head hunger fades or becomes more manageable this becomes more doable. If I was feeling now how I felt the 1st two days I wouldn’t be on day 6 no way, I would have surrendered to those ribs I wanted so bad and a cold beer [emoji23]

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
