Dear Susan,

I was really glad to see your post. I have not lost any weight for the past 5 months, and I have also been eating too much junk and soft food. I am an emotional eater as well, and do not deal with stress in functional ways. I also had issues about being overfilled, as I had two emergency defills after days of pain, vomiting and dehydration. I really don't want that to happen to me again.

This Quest to lose weight and become healthier is not a race. I had a long talk with a nurse at Dr. Cockburn's clinic about this. I will have been banded for a year at the end of this month. In this time, I have lost 50 lbs. and managed to keep most of it off even during the most difficult times. It may take me another year or two to reach goal, and I am sure that life will take me through some more hard times while I am trying. Hang in. It is not a race. You do not have to keep up with all the people who are losing on a weekly basis.

I am trying to change my eating habits right now without worring about losing. I have some restriction, so I have to stop eating when I have had enough, and I am trying to stay away from the soft food and Soup demons.

It is a shame that more of us who are not brilliantly successful and prone to beating ourselves up do not have the courage to talk about it on this site. I have avoided this site for that very reason. I admire you for stepping up. You will do well in time, and learn different ways of coping with stress along the way. It just dosn't happen overnight, and the "diet" mentality we hear so much about on this site doesn't work for everyone.

On the up side, the slower you go, the more of a chance your skin has to shrink along with you. I hope to not have to undergo a Tummy Tuck when I am done! Hang in there and take small steps.

Well said Nancy. Diet is a word I try not to use. It is not a diet if it was, I would not have spent 16 K +. It is a whole new way of life learning to eat properly and how we reach that goal is an individual process. Some want to loose the weight fast and diet by starvation then work on proper eating habits and exercise. Others take the slow road changing their habits as they go. That is my choosen route but it won't work for everyone. Going slowly is frustrating along the way, but when I take a momemnt and reflect I see how far I have come. I hope Susan reads your message. I hardly know what to say because I am crying so hard. I am so overwhelmed by all your responses. After I posted, I got so scared again and almost called a dozen times to cancel my fill. But...I went today and did get it.

I am fortunate that my work situation which was causing me all the stress finally worked out at the end of last week. I am happy to report that I ended up receving a promotion and nice compensation increase as well. All after I was not sure that I would even have a job anymore!

When I walked into TLBC today, I was so nervous. I was so ASHAMED. But everyone was so nice and supportive, understanding and empathatic. I feel so much better that I went and will not let myself get to this place of shame again. I have learned something very valuable, and that is that I MUST deal with my emotional reactions to stress - i.s. eating. It is time to really do some serious work on myself and I am determined to do it - otherwise this will continue to happen again and again.

Thank you everyone, I am back on track and here to stay!

With love,

Susan

well said. I think it would be very rare if there is any bandster out there that has not had a few backwards step and beat themselves up. by posting, we stay in touch with people that have similar emotions and problems. Susan Silver do yourself a favor and us by posting. Don't forget as you are getting support from us, we are getting support from you. You may not realize that by posting how you feel and what you are doing, I for one am looking at your post and saying "I felt that way, I am not alone. I am not different." So give yourself a real big hug and say I am on the road again. Doddie

Hello Susan:

I'm so happy you posted and congratulations on your promotion. As everyone says we are one in this journey. This past week I couldn't keep away from those darn Halloween chocolates and today I finally chucked them all in the garbage (much to my mother's chagrin - but then she doesn't need to lose weight). We all understand how situations in life make us lose control and makes us eat out of control. WE ARE ALL THE SAME with one goal in mind - to get healthier. Think of this as a hiccup along your journey and now that you've gone for another fill start looking ahead and don't look back!!!

We are all proud of you.

Thank YOU for being so open and honest. You said things in your original post that I'm sure a lot of us wished we could have. Somehow you have made it easier for me, and most probably others, to post my feelings. I'm so glad you went ahead and got your fill. I didn't get one when I was supposed to because I'd gained weight and all it did was make me less restricted for six more weeks! You know, I've never admitted that to anyone til now. That's because of you. That was a few months ago. I am also so glad your job situation worked out for ya. I know that when that part of your life is in turmoil, it can consume all your waking hours, it seems. Now you're back on track and so am I and I am soooooooooooooooo proud of us! Know that I, along with all the others, are here for you and we know you're here for us as well. Take care now in my "second" home!!! As you know, I just LOVE your country and your forum!

I got goosebumps myself from reading all of the support directed at you but would be shared with any one of us. We really are all in this together and I feel proud to know that I have so many "friends" here in bandster land. Only we know what it is like to go through this stuff.

Always here for you, D:girl_hug:

Susan:

When I first came on this site and had a million questions, concerns and fears, you were the first person to respond to me. You calmed me with your wise words and I went into the surgery more excited than afraid. And you've been helpful throughout my post-op . Sorry we haven't yet gotten to meet in person, but I feel I already know you. I am so proud of you for seeing this through.

We all fall off the path at times (I know I did today!) but I know we both will get back to healthier, wiser choices.

And, thanks Donna. I feel a bit undeserving of praise today, but realistically know my general trend is good. I'm not sure yet about the next luncheon meeting but will try!!!

Hi Susan, I was so glad to see your post. I know you have the determination to get back on track becasue you posted here willing to share your good times and your bad. It takes alot of courage to say how you are feeling and talk about your personal issues.

The emotional part of this journey is a difficult one. Most people with food addictions, eating disorders and obesity related issues have a love/hate relationship with food. We all have in the past or currently continue to use food in unhealthy ways at different times in our lives and for different reasons. The most important thing is that we realize what it means to us personally so that we can make changes in our health behaviors. It sounds like you made an important discovery through all this and feel ready to tackle your emotional eating response. I have no doubt that you will suceed!

Keep in touch, a support system during trying times is very crucial.

Take care,

Thanks again to you all. I had my fill yesterday and am delighted to report that my portions are back to bandster size again! I had one small slip today, when without really thinking, I took a lolipop from the halloween leftovers in my office. Sugar is the enemy. Once you start on it you can't stop - at least for me. I have to detox from it completely so I don't have the cravings. Other than that, I feel good and am excited to be in the mindset of anything is possible - including getting to goal! I even updated my ticker.

Yes, we all need to support each other and even though I don't have as much time to be on the forum, I will do my best to support all of you guys as well!

Susan

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
