So this might sound crazy and most may not understand why I am asking but - has any one ever gone to their surgeon and requested a slightly less of their stomach to be removed ? Like I have read that some doctors do differently such as one may remove 90 percent of the stomach while others may remove 70 percent . So my question is has this been done and is this a thing that the doctor may accommodate on your size etc ? Can I request he doesn't take as much stomach ? I'm going to be self pay .

I think that telling the surgeon how big to make your stomach is like telling your PCP that you have herpes and need Valtrex because you saw a Caltrex commercial, and if you feel compelled to tell the surgeon how big to make your stomach, you should find another surgeon that you trust.

I think that if you want a slightly bigger sleeve then you are still struggling with the desire to consume food in the same old ways. Which is the problem to begin with.

Chose a physician you trust and then trust the physician you chose.

They all have their own techniques they have developed and I don’t think it’s wise to ask one to do things differently.

Also, they use the same technique to guide the diameter of the sleeve in their patents, but that is going to be a different percentage in different patients because a 5’ tall woman’s stomach is SHORTER than a 6’ tall man’s so if the doc makes the diameter the same because of their technique it may remove 80% of the woman’s stomach but only 70% of the man’s

Tell me. Why would you do the surgery. Then ask for less to be removed than your surgeon finds to be most successful?

I asked my surgeon about this, as the say they remove 80%. He said the percentage removed is not a precise measurement, as everyone's stomach is naturally a different size. It's hard to put a number on it. If they use the same size bougie on your stomach and my stomach, they might remove 90% of yours, but only 70% of mine. It's not like they measure your stomach, calculate the cc's it holds, and perform the surgery based on that. They use the bougie for sizing, and everyone is left with the same diameter sleeve, but some might be longer, shorter, etc based on their initial stomach size.

There might be special cases of course, but my surgeon uses the same process for everyone. The 80% is a general percentage of how much stomach is removed, because they really cant or don't measure it.

Even though the surgery doesn’t really work this way, I am curious why would you want less removed?

I love people who all of sudden know more than expert assisting them, it is engrained in our culture like a bad case of hemorrhoids. The doctor will have the final say so on the recommended stomach size based on the surgeon's experience.

According to my surgeon, I’m more likely to be successful post-surgery because my stomach was disproportionately large and they removed a lot of it.

I'm not sure as to why every one cares so much for the WHY I'm asking . I'm a faceless stranger on the internet so I'm curious is to WHY the question bothers you all so much .

Also - I am curious as to why every one on this site seems to be so rude and " holier than thou". Pretty sure this site is for people who went through or are going to go through the same experiences . If you were part of a cancer group - would you condemn

Some one for their choice go through chemo or to live life till it's time to go with the extra pain and suffering involved in going through chemo ? Or would you lift them up ?

My point is that before you go judging and assuming, maybe in a kind way ask the person what thought process or mental standpoint brought them to ask a certain thing in the first place .

I did not come to this site to ask people things to help my decide in a surgery I might have , to be judge by other fat people who had the same surgery I'm thinking of having . In my case this option isn't solely about weight loss . It's has to do with other medical conditions and injuries going on . It's not about how much weight I can or want to lose after having it done . To be that's just an added bonus .

I don't have to explain myself to strangers especially ones who seem to want to put me down or make me feel small or like I have some sort of problem . Do you guys feel proud of yourselves now ? I surely

Hope so . Thanks for the POSITIVE FEEDBACK GUYS . Super appreciate it .

I am sorry you got a lot of negative feedback. I was concerned about my sleeve size as well because my doctor had concerns about me getting to thin. I was a revision due to lapband complications. So I had to do two surgeries six months apart to fix everything. I actually do think he left my stomach slightly bigger . At Surgery day I was 180 wearing size sixes and some eights. Two and a half weeks out I am back to fours . So yeah the stomach size was a concern for me.

Lapband 9/11/07 227 pounds
Vsg 2/13/18
Pre op diet 188
Sd. 180
Cw 167.4 Dr. scale says says one pound less
First goal 169 2/26/18
Second 150
Goal weight 138

My surgeon puts in a tool endoscopicly during surgery that he uses as a model to measure the staple line & how big your pouch will be. Everyone’s stomach is the same size after surgery. He said the average stomach removed is 85% leaving no elasticity in most cases.

From what the surgeon said in my seminar, they remove as much of the elasticity part to prevent stretching. They figured out the more you leave the greater chances of the surgery failing in time.

You know I really appreciate that ! That was one of my concerns as well , I read a few other people's stories and one specifically scared me because the girl had lost too much weight , and kept losing and she kept getting sick and had trouble with eating enough and or keeping it down . So that kind of scared me . Thank you so much for being kind and sharing your story with me 🖤

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
