Can You Drink Too Much Post Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi y'all. I have a problemo. My post-op instructions for Stage 1 Full liquids sets an hourly limit on how much liquid we are supposed to consume: 8fl oz/hour max.

I am doing so well with swallowing and can accommodate big swallows! It's easy to take 1/2oz swallow! So my 8oz goes in very quickly--then I have to wait until the next hour. I'm not doing too well, splitting that into 15 minutes intervals! I'm usually done in 20-30 minutes with the full 8oz.

Can I hurt my new RNY pouch by drinking too much Fluid? I don't have a sense of fullness, unless it's a slightly thicker liquid. Do you think at Day 6, I still need to limit to 8fl oz/hour?

How much are you drinking now?

TIA!

I don't think I would micro-analyze this. Just make sure you meet your daily Fluid requirements. During the first few weeks some people find it difficult to meet their fluid and Protein goals. This is because their stomach is in a major heal mode. Just keep working towards those goals.

I never had a daily fluid upper limit, and as far as I can determine, I turned out fine.

My doc had a hard firm limit the first week of 4 ounces per hour. I'm not shitting you. 16 hours a day, I was drinking one ounce per 15 minutes for the first 7 days.

Second week, we had a 8oz per hour limit.

Crap! She told me 4oz per hour in the hospital. So I thought it was that...but then I looked at the handout the RD gave me and in the Phase 1 Full Liquids it shows 8oz per hour. So I've been alternating roughly 4oz/hour with 8oz/hour.

Hope I don't eff myself up! :(

Nah, you won't. Just one of those weird variances between groups.

Yes, I'm talking more about pouch capacity especially when it isn't fully healed. Is the extra liquid stretching it and challenging it, perhaps making a leak, or ulcer, or fissure?

I pulled out my binder so you could have another point of reference. Week 1 is 8 ounces of Clear Liquids every 2 hours, (not very helpful, amiright?). But then in Week 2, I am directed to have up to an 8-11 ounce Protein Shake in 30 minutes, with 30/30 rule before and after. So there is a huge jump in the rate of consumption from Day 7 to Day 8. Bottom line is I'm sure you are fine, but a quick call to your surgeon's office may allay your worries. :-)

I don't think you should worry too much about how much water/fluids you're drinking, but def work to not gulp. Start getting into the idea of 'smaller over longer time' - applies to drinking and eventually eating. Already being used to sipping liquids will make taking smaller bites of food a more normal idea. Congrats on being almost a week out!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
