Living alone after surgery

Recommended Posts

Did anyone live alone when they had surgery? My mom is going to come and stay with me, but I can’t see her staying more than a week.

is there anything I should know about or consider? I have a 15 minute walk in my city to work everyday from my apartment. If I am experiencing too much pain to walk, I will get an Uber. I’ve heard of making sure that things that I need aren’t too low to the ground or too high as bending and reaching can be an painful.

I’m in the same situation! I’m taking off a week for work and my mom will be here that week, but then after that I’ll be going back to my normal commute into the city, which includes walking and the train. I’m curious to know what insight people have to offer about this!

I live by myself, did not have anyone stay with me. I made sure my house was prepared for when i got home, fridge prepped, house cleaned, laundry done etc. so I could relax for a few days. A friend stopped over a few days post op and did some minor chores for me (scooping cat litter, dragging garbage bins to the end of the driveway) but i could have done them myself with some discomfort. I was driving 4 days post op, mostly bc i was bored and wanted to get out of the house but I also was in school and had to attend class. The first few days are the worst then you should notice dramatic improvement each day, a week should be plenty as far as having help around.

Personally, I would really try to get 2 weeks off of work if you could..i definitely needed it.

I live with my husband and two teens. I wished I had lived alone! I would have loved a day or two of quiet. I cooked dinner for them all the night after I came home! :) I am able to split my work between home and office. I had surgery Tuesday, got home Wednesday. Friday, I did the grocery shopping as normal, but had them carry stuff in because I had a 10 pound lifting limit until my post op appointment. I worked from home most of the day Friday. I was in the office on Monday for most of the day. Tuesday I worked from home a full day, as I would normally do and by Wednesday, a week after getting home, things were pretty normal for me. But your mileage may vary. Just make sure you have what you in in the house before you head out for surgery and consider finding a pharmacy that will deliver your prescriptions so you don't have to wait for them or go out to get them after you get home.

Best of luck on your journey.

I live alone but I didn't come straight home after surgery. I went to my parent's place. I didn't think I could manage the first few days on my own and I was kind of right. I kept forgetting to get in enough fluids and didn't care too much for eating. After a while, my Vitamins at the time got a little gross-tasting so I wouldn't take those. They had to continuously remind to take my post-op antacid meds and the meds I would normally take. Lol

I was there from the day I left the hospital, til after Memorial Day which was last year. So... About after a month I went back home, they felt I was ready enough.

Best thing to do or to consider is to find vitamins you'll enjoy eating post op... Before your surgery day... Or get the Patches. The patches are easier but seems to cost more but a lot of people find coupons somewhere for them now. I just get the gummies free of charge. My insurance pays for them as long as go to a certain store.

Maybe your insurance does the same?

Also if you feel a week may not be enough, see if she'd be willing to let you stay there for as long as you need. If you're within the same city limits or somewhere close, just take an uber to work from there. Some things like getting up or even just walking from here to there can be a little tough for some... Then there's the whole nausea thing and being sleepy all the time. Helps just having an extra pair of eyes in cases like these cause I know I lost track of things they wanted me to keep note of. My mom saved my butt when it came to that.

You could be better at that than I am... Just thought I'd give you a heads up or something.

Thanks for the advice! I haven’t even gotten to think about vitamins yet.

My mom lives in NJ and is flying to Charlotte for my surgery, too far to Uber unfortunately lol.

Lol understandable. I wouldn't spend that much on an uber ride either.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
