Out With the Old--In With the New!

I was going to call this Break On Through To The Other Side (thank you Doors). But I figured I'd get sick of it after a while. I'm going to use this space to keep track on the 2 week march toward surgery and then to keep track of the recovery and progress. That way I can keep it all together and if I just do one thread, it's all in one place without clogging up the Blog Area. I'm sure it's gonna be excruciatingly boring to everyone--me included! I'm a list and minutia kinda gal. I like tracking and counting--although I can be equally lax about crap. So I stop just short of OCD town (not that there's anything wrong with that).

My official 2 week liquid diet starts tomorrow. I decided to jump on it today because Sunday feels like a great place to start and because it's hard to do better than yesterday as my last food day before surgery. I'm a Texan, born and raised, and yesterday we had a fairwell to my ass and thighs via a Texas BBQ tour through Houston and Tomball. I ate so much brisket, sausage and ribs, I can honestly claim to be over it. Growing up in a BBQ family, slow smoked meats is almost in my blood. So it was only natural that I would choose that as the last rights.

I'm having RNY on February 20th and as I understand it, moist (fatty) brisket might not be my friend post surgery. Supposedly high fat foods (which moist brisket is) might cause a sort of "dumping" in the poop department. So I figure my future, once healed, might only include lean cuts of brisket and smoked meats. It's a choice I will readily make to lose weight and get my health back.

So the morning Day 1 hasn't been very difficult--a little hunger and growly tummy, but nothing that makes me feel anxiety. Protein drinks on board and this afternoon will shop for SF popsicles, SF jello and bone broth. I think I'll stick to packaged bone broth so I can get the actual nutritional information from a certified source. There's no real way for me to tell how many calories and carbs are in the bone broth I make here at home.

My Pre-Op Plan includes: 80-100g of protein; low fat; 60g carbs and somewhere around 1000cals per day.

4-5 Protein Drinks containing a minimum of 15g of protein per serving. They must be low fat and low sugar and can't contain over 4g of sugar per serving. I can have clear low sodium broths, sugar free drinks, sugar free jello and sugar free clear popsicles (no fudgsicles or ice cream based pops).

I will do this from now until February 20th.

I'm pretty sure I will be doing plenty of the following:

Day 5 Post Op - 224.4lbs

Ok, so upfront let me just admit that the scale drives me bonkers and that it's a short trip. I know intellectually that I should not be weighing right now. I get it. LOL. But, as Hal said in 2001 Space Odyssey, "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that." *snort*

I also want to say that I fully recognize I am the scale's little bi*ch.

I was so good yesterday. I did add in the Celebrate Vitamin Drink Stix and calcium chewy bites. But fu*k me! There's a ton of carbs in them! I'm not real good with sugar alcohols like sorbitol and maltitol (they spike my blood sugar) and they are choc-full of them. So I'm going to go in search of new vitamins this morning. And I'm clueless.

In my mind, I should be down to pre-surgery weight at the very minimum at 5days post surgery. I'm walking, getting plenty of water in, and taking my vitamins. I'm also getting in around 72g of protein daily, and between 20-25g of carbs daily. So why am I up 0.2lbs this morning? Oh, and I had a poopy too...so I don't think it's that I'm full of poop any longer! I'm eating about 400cals per day! How can ANYONE not lose weight on that amount?

Now, I know weight loss isn't linear. I know I have a lot of inflammation left from the surgery and that I'm still doing a lot of healing. Blah blah blah...but it still boils down to the irrational fear that I mutilated my digestive track for nada. No bueno por nada!

LOL, please forgive this little rant. I feel like I had one due to me, because I feel like I've been a pretty model citizen through the pre-op liquid stage to the post op liquid stage.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Fu*k you scale!!!!

In other news, the pain is level is very, very low. I didn't even take my pain pills this morning. Will go take my gabapentin now though cuz I committed to taking it for a month. So at least that's good.

I ran a 100 degree fever last night, but it's back to being normal. As I understand it's pretty common post surgery to run low grade fevers for a while.

Ok, feel free to jump in and talk me off the ledge and cheerlead! :D

You know this, but maybe you need reminding... your body has gone through a massive trauma. It's in survival mode for the moment as you begin to heal. When the body is in survival mode it will hang on to fat stores like my 5 year old with his favourite stuffy. Be patient, stay the hell away from the scale, and love your new anatomy... [emoji178][emoji4] hugs to you!

I will probably react the same way and be on my scale the second I get home from surgery lol. I am sure the scale will start moving for you ! Best of luck!!! :)

I can relate! 20 days post op and finding the scales a real struggle, even though I know the theory.

Perhaps we should introduce a new stage,

Pre op Liquid diet

Clear fluids

5 days! whoop whoop! Bring out the pom pom's!

As positive as you usually are we give you a pass on the rant;) Soon you will beat the dang scale and be flufflesschix

I weighed like you did...and was just as freaked out, but I went back and read in other forums that folks who have lost a good amount of weight prior to surgery often do not lose in the beginning.... like an early 3 week stall? I don't know but I'm holding onto that theory for dear life! and told my husband to hide the scale from me! You are doing great! You've got this!

I have additions to the “paranoid I am never going to lose weight” stage (which, incidentally, is a recurring stage - at a minimum you get this stage at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and I dare say there will be more.

There is the “OMG I can eat anything, did he really DO the surgery” stage.

This is quickly followed by the “omg I am losing weight so fast because I can’t eat much and how do I eventually stop this weight loss” stage.

I have gone through the “pretty miserable that all I can eat forever is Haloumi and yoghurt” stage, as well as the “hell I am so lucky at my food because my favourites are Haloumi and yoghurt” stage.

And of course the “why is no-one commenting on my weight loss” stage, and it’s cousin the “it is embarrassing how everyone is commenting on my weightloss” stage.

Oh dear Lord, these are priceless!!!!! ROFLMAO!!!! I :780_sparkling_heart: you. I truly do. You complete me!!!!

At 6 months post surgery, I can confirm that my scale paranoia is still strong. I don’t lose any weight one week and I convince myself that I will never lose weight again!

These stages can repeat themselves!

Day 6 Post Op - 223 lbs

Woke up this morning and felt F-I-N-E, FINE! :D Slept well. Only pain pills I'm taking are gabapentin for nerve inflammation. Not even taking liquid tylenol. Drinking is going so well. It's hard to limit things to 8fl oz/hour. I can comfortably swallow 1/2 ounce at a time! :( Am getting in my 60-80g of protein per day. Am around 20-25g carbs daily and very low fat. Think I'm still only getting about 400-450 cals/day (not intentionally trying to keep things low).

I'm almost down to pre-surgery weight: only 0.2lbs away. :D Exact much? hehe

I do have MASSIVE bruises all over my abdomen and on the arm where they tried to get my veins for an iv. I seriously have purple bruises all along my lower tummy/pannus. But they don't hurt. They only amaze.

It's a pretty boring post op blow-by-blow after-action report. Thank you sweet baby Jesus of the golden fleece diaper and tiny hands and feet! I think I'm gonna try to work a couple of hours today. Luckily I work from home.

Thank you to everyone who has been following and cheering me on!!!
