After Surgery Questions

Hello All,

I am only in the beginning of my journey. I met with a nutritionist yesterday and it didn't go well. She basically told me that I will never be able to eat anything other than mush for the rest of my life. I got really freaked out. The thought of never having a bite of chicken or even a raw carrot scared me. I don't want to cancel everything, because this is a life changer for me and can give me the life that I have always wanted. But the thought of living a life where I can't even eat a raw carrot sounds horrible.

Any one who has gone through the process have some thoughts? Thanks!

i would eat mush to extend my life. This is a great opportunity take it! Everything will be new but the benefits will outweigh the bad

Curios what ins do you have? You have to meet with a nutritionist wow, what else. I'm very uninformed.

Some of these dieticians and nutritionists must have taken a semester course in mean and nasty. I'm sure you aren't sentenced to a lifetime of mush and gruel. There are too many things in this life that are colorful, tasty, full of Vitamins and minerals and have a texture. As one small,example,i like to nuke a small sweet potato in the microwave, split it open like you would a baked white potato and have at it. And it is a good source of vitamins.

You most definitely CAN have chicken after surgery, but you will need to wait several weeks post surgery. As for a raw carrot I don’t know. My dietician never mentioned that. I just had my surgery on 1/22/18.

Seize the opportunity for the surgery. It WILL be tough at first but everyone I know who did it are glad they did, including me!

Was there a reason you can not have anything but mush? Have you special medical reasons?

If not, and your nutritionist was saying this about all of us who have bariatric surgery - when, she is talking through a hole in her arse! I am seven weeks post op and tonight for dinner I had two slices of chilli-laced haloumi cheese with pesto mayo along with a cucumber/rocket salad with tamarillo vinegar dressing. Fabulous! In total, maybe 1/2 cup of deliciousness!

Go on to the recipes forum, and look at the great stuff people are eating post sleeve surgery!

Eating mush for the rest of my life! What, who told you that? Your nutritionist!

The answer to your question is no, you do not have to eat mush for the rest of your life.

I am 5 years post op RNY gastric bypass surgery and I do eat steak and chicken sometimes or even a raw carrot.

After your surgery, you will go through a phase where you will be restricted to full liquids. After that you will be allowed to eat pureed foods. Then you will transition to solid foods. This transition is to allow your stomach to heal after the surgery. For me each of these two initial phases lasted 4 weeks each.

Your nutritionist must not have a lot of experience with bariatric patients. Like James stated, you will have a period where you must eat "mush" foods after liquids, of course. Within a month or two, you will be able to start eating things like turkey, chicken, etc.

I am 6 months out, and can eat EVERYTHING that I was able to eat pre-op. I eat crunchy vegetables all of the time. It is just important to chew your food well.

Don't worry about it. You will be fine. Just take your time introducing new foods.

I'm curious... is this nutritionist actually a part of your program? It sounds like they are anti-WLS and not at all educated about it.

My nutritionist was and has been wonderful! Its over a year since I started seeing her. At my sessions we first talked about proper portion sizes, difference once I had the surgery. I was advised by her and my surgeon to add 1 new food a day this way if it makes you suck or gives you pain you know the culprit. She explained nutrition and the different Vitamins and supplements. My Protein, how much I need, and even advised on what her patients feedback on the shakes were. I was sleeved 10/17 and still have a problem with a few foods. chicken and pork. If it is canned chicken I can do it. (I dont drain it and mash it with a fork) i can do tuna like the chicken, i can do steak, but only about an ounce of meat. I rarely have room for veggies and carbs. Also was told to try them again in 6 months, your tastes change. And so does your itty bitty tummy!
Mind you, I do go to a weightloss center and ALL of the drs except psych ate in there. I like it because they all work together when there is an issue. Can go and ask questions.

I was doing well after surgery so when I saw my surgeon two weeks post-op, she told me that I could eat chicken, such as rotisserie. She said to eat very small bites and chew a lot first. If you can, may be worth switching to another dietician. The one you have is very confused.

I have PacificSource. I had to meet with a therapist, dietitian and have 6 appointments with the surgeon over 6 months. I am already one appointment down.

Nope. I have no medical reason to only eat mush. That is why I thought it was a little weird.

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
