Able to eat more than I should

Ok so I am not alone, I had my surgery 12/11 & I have only lost 6lbs since surgery. I had lost 24 lbs doing just the liquid diet pre-op. Should I be worried? I am feeling really lost & discouraged.

I'm in the same boat. I had my surgery 12/11 too. I lost about 20 pounds before the surgery, then another 16 pounds pretty quick after surgery, but for the last 3-4 weeks - nothing. The scale hasn't moved since I started eating pureed food (now I'm about 1 day out from completely 'normal' food).

I know a stall around 3 weeks post surgery is pretty common, but I'm starting to lose hope. it's been almost a month and no more weight loss. I'm drinking Water, eating Protein, exercising - my nutritionist says any calorie intake between 400-1000 is fine (I'm usually around 600-700). Maybe it just didn't work for me?

I think I need to reset my pouch. Starting tomorrow I'm gonna go back on Protein Shakes and liquids for about two weeks, just in case I might have stretched my pouch.

This is a myth. The "reset" is to get you back on track with a proper diet. It isn't going to magically make your sleeve smaller. The stretchy part of your stomach is what gets removed. Your new stomach IS supposed to stretch out to an extent over time and you should be able to eat more. You also need to be more specific. What constitues a meal for you? What are you eating? Have you introduced slider foods back into your diet? Is the issue of eating too large of a portion or being able to eat another "meal" 1-2 hours after your last meal? There are key differences here.

I wish I could recall the member that originally posted this, but they put up a picture similar to this. So many people were saying it's impossible to eat all of that being a year out. Actually, it isn't as hard as you think. If you start on the potatoes first I could get all of those down and my chicken and some of the veggies. Now flip that around. If I start on the chicken first I'd likely get some of the veggies or potatoes, but that's it. Why? Because I started with the denser Protein first.

Think of it like this - you're trying to fill a hole with some freshly made cement and some hunks of rock to at as a filler. You can do it two different ways. One way is to pour the cement in first and then throw some chunks of rock into it. The other way is to put all the chunks in first and then pour in the cement. The difference? You'll likely get more of each in by starting with the cement first because it's going to fill all those little voids up. If you started with the rocks the cement may not be able to reach all those little spots or ever reach the bottom. This is a broad overview but do you understand the relationship?

It's important to get a good understanding of slider foods and how they work. It isn't to paint the picture that all slider foods are bad for you. I consider yogurt to be a slider food because it's a liquid at room temperature. It's going to break down and go through your system much faster than 4 oz of chicken.

If your not losing try tracking everything that goes in your mouth in great detail (portion, calories, Protein, liquid, time). If you keep a detailed log that will help you make a concrete plan with your nutritionist.

Most folks should be getting somewhere around 800-1200 calories a day a few months out. Likely you are getting too many from liquid calories, consuming too much (though that should be hard if you aren't constantly eating) or very high density foods.

Thank everyone that has responded to this. Lots of good advice that I'm going to take. I'm keeping a journal which I have not before and after one day I realized that I'm snacking more than I thought, not getting all my Water or Protein. Lots of "slider" foods and empty calories. Eating too quickly as well...I have to discipline myself and do better with mindful eating! Thanks everyone

Hello everyone, it's been awhile! I pray everyone had a beautiful holiday season. I feel that I can eat too much with my sleeve. I make myself stop eating, because I know I shouldn't be eating much, but what scares me is the fact that I can eat more. I have read people saying they can only take in a few spoonfuls and I can eat an entire meal. I am really worried about this. I am losing weight, but not how I feel I should be. Anyone else feels that they can eat more than you should?

Big debate on if you can stretch your sleeve....Very few surgery revisions are done...Enough said.

I am three years. Yes, I can hold more food volume. But it's not like pre surgery. When I go back to weight loss mode to maintain my weight......

I log my food. I eat Protein first. I eat all the veggies with each meal to the point where I feel full. I cut carbs and sugar (they leave me craving them more)

Stalls and plateaus happen. It's part of the process. Keep plugging away at your plan to get the scale moving again. If you are having a large shall see the link below on how to break it.

Grazing...If you find yourself eating more frequent meals. If you find yourself eating way more calorie to take you out of weight loss. Then evaluate what you are doing, Go back to basics.

Thank you for the link to that post. I am on week two of my stall (sleeved 12/19/17) and also feel like I am able to eat more that I should. I have been on the brink of spiraling and going back to old habits of calorie restriction etc. But that post help me reel myself back in.

Junior Guru, thank you for asking these questions. I have to answer no to some of them. I eat my meals too fast and I take my liquid in too soon after or before I eat. I have some changes to make in order for me to see the progress I want. Since I made this post I have been doing better. I can still do better and will do better. I am down 50 pounds since my surgery in September.

Thank you, everyone, for responding. Your advice is well taken and appreciated.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
