What is Dumping and how do I know if it is happening?

Recommended Posts

I will share my one exp with eating to much sugar. My wife and i picked up some Chinese food while out and it turned out the sauce was nearly pure sugar. It took less than a minute till i knew i was going to be sick. i felt hot and sweaty and could feel the nausea sweep over me in waves. the closest thing i could recall was the one time i had the actual flu i felt almost like that but thank god it only lasted about 20 minutes and then passed probably caused i stopped eating after second bite.

other than that you can google dumping after weight loss surgery to see the actual medical terms but was and has been my 1 and only exp. i now avoid eating any sauce i can't get a list of ingredients for. hope this helps

I have issues with dumping if I have too much sugar. I get it if I try to eat Peanut Butter. I get extremely nauseous, cold sweats, usually my head will spin, and I can even get diarrhea afterwards. It’s an awful feeling and if you get it, you will know and not want to do it again, and beg God for sweet sweet death. Sometimes it lasts 10-15 minutes but the longest it lasted for me was an hour.

dumping is uncommon with VSG because you still have use of your pyloric valve. As for RNY, the statistic that I see thrown around this board a lot is that about 30% of RNY patients dump. Not sure if there's any research to back that number up, but I can say that a lot of us RNY's don't dump.

I had a VSG and I can tell you have have definitely experienced dumping before. When it first happened it was one of the most frightening things to happen to me. Mostly because I didn’t know what was going on and it came on so suddenly.

Basically, you feel this wave come over you: hot flash, cold sweat, nausea, and for me, horrible diarrhea (sorry for the TMI). I have ended up sitting on the toilet for close to an hour before with a trash can in my lap in case I need to vomit. My head spins and I feel like I’m going to pass out. Very scary.

This is part of the reason I avoid new foods if I know I can’t go home/use a restroom privately.

Now I avoid overly sweet things, and really take the time to slow down and eat. I had the tendency in the past to inhale my food which could exacerbate it IMO!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
