What's your beauty secret?

Recommended Posts

I'm between 5-6 months out from DS and have lost around 85 lbs. I've lost a lot of fat in my face which I feel is making me look older, I have more wrinkles around my eyes and my skin under my chin is loose. Has anyone found anything that works well to help that sagging skin tone up, or a good under eye make up that doesn't accentuate the wrinkles? I know nothing will fix it other than maybe eventual cosmetic surgery, but I'd like to find something that can help camouflage until I'm ready for that.

Share your beauty secrets ladies!

Currently I'm using a Vitamin C lotion on my face and neck and applying emu oil to my neck and under eye area before bed. It's very moisturizing. I'm using Clarins concealer which is ok, but I can only use a tiny bit, even a drop too much and it makes the wrinkles stand out more.

My favorite moisturizer is pure lanolin at night. I found some liquid lanolin on Amazon. It goes on easier if your face and hands are damp. For concealer for dark under eyes I like NYX undereye with a couple of drops of argon oil added to it. I also like Becca under eye illuminating creme

Honestly the best trick I have is a good diet and lots of Water. I noticed with even one day of eating salty, more processed food (even as a vegan), my skin is more wrinkly and dehydrated and I look more sallow. Tons of fruits and veggies along with a day of fresh juice only here and there really make me look better.

That being said, I do use beauty products to help! I use toxin-free products and a shower filter since heavy metals and chemicals zap the life out of skin. My fave line is Pacifica Beauty and they are pretty cheap! You can get it at Target and Ulta. Their micellar water and Dreamy Youth Day & Night cream are my daily staples. The other daily thing I use is Andalou Naturals SPF Daily Defense facial lotion, as well as using an umbrella and sunglasses if I have to go out in the sun (I think you can also get this at Target).

I've got lots of other specialty potions I use, but those are the ones keeping me going currently!

Congrats on your 85lbs!

My skin is super sensitive so I can’t play around with different products without losing out on tons of money. Currently the only moisturizer I’ve been able to consistently use is FAB (first aid beauty)

I used pure coconut oil on my tummy when all those stab wounds were healing (which took forever!) coconut oil is good for just about anything.

No seriously, I just went to Vegas for the first time and I swear I aged 10 years in a week! I was so achy and flaky!

Do what the ancients used to do ... it works for me.

Massage your skin with kitchen grade EVOO. Pat dry with a paper towel.

Rub with grainy salt ... table salt will do.

Reapply EVOO. Massage skin. Wipe off with a paper towel.

Within 30-45 minutes, have a warm shower.

Im finding that my skin has really cleared up this past week pre op with all the liquids and I’m now two days post op and I’m kind of glowing in the face! I might be mistaking that for a drug induced hot flash though LOL

I got several samples of Caudalie face lifting cream from Sephora and of course it’s amazing stuff with a heafty price tag but it’s very soothing and a little goes a long way- my face and neck are loving it! For new tattoos I always use raw Shea butter and that is extremely nourishing! As soon as I can put it on my belly that’s what I’ll start using again, for now I use all over.

Following, can’t wait to read what everyone else is in to....

As a believer in skin care here’s what I do.

For all over body moisturizer I se Shea butter. In the shower I clean body with almond oil and s good scrub with a natural loofah. I use dr Bonner’s soap on private parts, under arms and face.

I don’t use fancy moisturizers but use them generously.

I don’t shower every day but do wash certain parts every day with a washcloth. I think we over shower in America. You can handle hygiene without subjecting your entire body to it.

For under eye concealer I like Nars.

This is an interesting one for me.

Preop, I never used anything on my skin. Body wash in the shower. That's it!

Postop I started using lotion after every shower to try and ward off loose skin, if at all possible.

So, I had 10 years worth of lotions laying around that were almost never used. They are all used up now, and I had to buy my first bottle. I found a huge bottle of cocoa butter for like $2, so am using that right now. Actually smells like chocolate!

Now, for my face, I use a facial moisturizer that has sunscreen. First I grabbed Cetaphil, and it seemed to work well.

When that ran out, I went with CeraVe, but noticed my pores seemed to be clogged a lot more. Took a while to decide to change moisturizers. So tried Aveeno. Same thing. Went back to Cetaphil, and within a week the clogs were gone!

At like $14 a small bottle, it's rich, but I'm sold. It does last a while.

I do notice a bottle of body lotion used to last a couple weeks, now lasts over a month. Smaller body uses less!

I just read a topic in a - sort of - unrelated post where @James Marusek recommended Bio Oil and his motion was seconded. You can find that thread here:

As a follow up, I started using raw shea butter on my under eye area and my neck twice a day. I love it and feel like it's really helping. It's not going to "fix" the problem, but I can definitely tell the difference on the days that I use it vs the days I don't, so I try not to skip a day. It can feel a little heavy, so in the morning I mix it with my emu oil and apply right after my shower, it absorbs pretty well by the time I put my make up on.

As a bonus, when I went jogging on a cool and windy day, I used some on my face before going and it helped protect my skin from wind burn.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
