How do you calculate ideal weight?

Recommended Posts

How should I calculate what is my ideal weight? My surgeon dodges this question. I played football in high school at 165. I wasn't skinny then, but pretty decent. Can't imagine being thinner than that but if I were to go by the BMI chart I'd have to get down lower than 145. That's not going to happen! Would it be better to measure body fat percentage and then calculate what I'd be at 10%?
My stats:
Height: 5' 8"
Age: 46
Sleeved on 10/18/2017
HW: 270
SW: 233
CW: 222
GW: 170??

Not sure what chart you are going by. You could be up to 164 and be in the normal bmi range, but ideal weight I don't think is that simple. If I were to get down to normal bmi range I'd look like I was starving.

I'm a trust your body kinda gal. I'm 5'1" and the weight charts show my ideal as 110. I work out 6 days a week, a lot of the thin girl that work out with me that are around my height are 130-160 and look amazing. Body composition will have a HUGE bearing on what your actual ideal weight will be,

I’m 5’7 .. by following the chart my best weight would be 160.

What is a healthy weight to you? Will it be a number? Could it be how your lab work and health looks? You can get out of this whatever you want to put into this. Goals change and evolve with time. I wanted to just have my life back. Now I want to be athletic.

Pick a weight in the beginning that you feel comfortable with. When you get close to that weight you can reset your goal higher or lower.

Male your height 165 to 190 is the healthy range of the BMI Chart.

Body Fat percentage: Lean 7.7 to 14.8 - Ideal is 16.9 to 22.4 - Average is 23.9 to 27.7

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
