Am I really about to do this?

Recommended Posts

This is something that I thought about doing for a while, by a while I mean over 2 years. I have finally gotten to the point where I am now being tested for sleep apnea and NOTHING I do drops weight. So of course I just go back to eating junk. I scheduled my initial consultation with the surgeon and now that I have....I feel like the appointment is TOO FAR AWAY! How is that even possible? Has anyone else had this struggle....where you didn't want surgery.....then finally decided and wanted it done yesterday? How did you deal?

I have been thinking about doing this surgery for the past 3 years. Got my first referral from my dr. over 2 years ago. I was scared and never even followed through.. I was not ready then. Then over the summer I decided it was time. I a new referral and actually followed through this time. I started appointments in August. Now I feel like time is going so slow. I just want to start my new life. I meet with my dr. on Friday and am hoping to get an idea of when my surgery will be. I am crossing my fingers it will be soon. I have grown very impatient!

My turning point was this summer. We have a rather large speed boat. I am short. I was having problems getting in and out of it which never used to happen to me. And then we were on the lake and it was hard for me to get in and out of the boat even with the ladder. That was the point where I was like this has to change. Being out on the lake is my favorite place to be...

I have wanted to do this for a long time and never did because I thought that the hoops to jump through would be a struggle. And then I found out that my insurance is a breeze to deal with. I wish I had known sooner.

Everything you mentioned is normal behavior for many of us. I researched for two years. I canceled two initial appts to finally go on the third and keep this journey going. Thoughts of backing out (cause I can do this if I really just try!!!!) always popped up. But trying on your own success rate is less than 2%. So, I stayed with the program. Had to practice patience through it though, the waiting can really mess with your thought process. Lol. Hang in there! Before you know it, you’ll be done and enjoying you new self. Just stick to the program your doc gives you. 😊 you can do it.

Luckily insurance is my life LOL.....I have a 500$ deductible and no pre-surgery requirements with insurance.....no hoops there!!!!!

No deductible here just a $250 copay. No requirements to meet other than bmi. Surgeon made me see a few docs but that was quick. Skin removal covered after 18 months post op with large weight losses in 3 months. December needs to hurry!

That is what I would like to have. I can't deal with the thought of having something foreign wrapped around my stomach and inside of me LOL and the bypass seems......difficult in comparison.

Yes! Every appointment and day leading up to it felt soooo slow for me!!! I dedicated my life to this stuff for over a year and now I'm like "now what?"[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] haha after I had surgery I was like "wow this process wasn't even that long!" But while I was in the waiting period it felt forever. I only had a 6-month period because I was proving to the docs I had what it takes, so I had my vsg at the earliest possible date, but it still felt like forever ahhaha lol

That's amazing insurance. The surgeon might have their own set of requirements though. You will not likely walk in one day and have surgery soon after. Just be prepared for that. My surgeon gives everyone a set amount to lose based on lots of things including liver size and blood tests and your ability to take the dieting seriously.

I wound up there because my insurance was so dumb. I asked for appts with a dietician but they said no because I wasn't diabetic or had other co-morbidities except sleep apnea, despite a very high BMI.
They said they would pay for surgery after 6 months of nutrition at the center. I went in thinking I would just have nutritional accountability there but not have surgery. But halfway through, I changed my mind because I've spent a lifetime of yo-yo dieting , I knew that it would just come back if I didn't have a stronger tool.
Don't be too anxious about getting it done quickly. Start setting up good habits now so you are ready.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
