Documenting the Steps

Recommended Posts

I want to document everything as I go, but don't want to do so in a place like Facebook where everyone I know can scrutinize my decisions. This seems like a good place.

I'll be starting the two-week pre-op clear liquid diet in the morning. Dr. Illan will perform my procedure on November 4th. I've never been to Mexico, so I'm excited about going to a new place to start this new life. I may be going alone, which is sad, but I've flown from the US to Malaysia on my own, so it should be just fine.

I received the Protein Water I ordered from Amazon yesterday and I'm not looking forward to drinking it, but I'm sure I'll manage. I'm going to make a stockpot full of homemade vegetable broth tomorrow and freeze some in single-serve dishes. Going caffeine-free is going to be a huge obstacle, so I think I'm going to brew a gallon of tea with one regular teabag and a few Decaf bags to get used to it first.

I'll take starting photos tomorrow, but I don't think I'll post them until I lose some weight and can use them for comparison. I'm at my highest weight currently. A few years ago I was able to lose via diet and exercise getting down below 200 for the first time in over a decade, but that didn't last long. I do believe this is my last chance and I'm ready to change.

Thank you both! The clear liquid pre-op diet is no fun. Everywhere I go, the smell of food has intensified to torment me. I've never been able to deal with the flavor of fake sweeteners, so Protein Water and sugar-free Jello are difficult to swallow. Of course it'll be worth it, but I do have to complain just a little bit.

Haha complain away! I start my pre op diet tommorrow and I’ve never been a fan of fake sweetener flavour either! I’m 3 days after you so I am looking forward to your updates.
Are you eating the free veg you’re allowed on the pre op? I might just have some extra strawberries to keep me going.
Are you excited? I’m totally excited but a bit nervous too, but more excited.
I have an endoscopy today and I’m even a bit excited about that! What’s wrong with me! I am a crazy person!
Looking forward to updates [emoji16]

That's great that you are right after me! We can stay in touch through all of this. My dr put me on Clear Liquids only for the next two weeks, so I don't get to eat fruits or veg. I'm so looking forward to mushy foods and that's several weeks away! I'd love some cottage cheese or refried Beans right about now. Are you in England?

Hello, you sound like you are on the right track. I too am going alone to Mexico with Dr Illan. My surgery is 10/28. The Protein Drinks are more tolerable very cold. I am on Day 5 of my liquid diet. Each day I have to eat a couple tsp. of toasted chicken breast to stop shaking. Other than that Im doing okay on it. The first 2 days are VERY tough. My surgery is Saturday so I will keep you posted on how everything goes as I experience it. That way you will know exactly what to expect. [emoji4]

I was a self professed professional coffee drinker. I loved my coffee. I could drink a cup and go right to sleep. My nutritionist had me give up caffeine three months prior to my surgery. She told me to drink herbal tea. I'm six weeks post op and I haven't gone back to coffee. Strange, I thought that I would go right back to it after surgery. I put 1/2 and 1/2 and splenda in my coffee. I drink the tea plain without anything added. So far herbal tea has been a better choice as I look to stay healthy and slim down.

Sherry, I really appreciate that you are willing to share your experiences! I'm feeling weak and shaking a bit. I'm glad to hear it's better after the first two days. I can't wait to hear how Saturday goes for you!!

Danny, it's great to hear you haven't had the desire to go back to coffee. I'm hoping to never want another Dr Pepper. I love unsweetened tea as well, so at least I'm not going to have to only drink something I don't like forever. I bought Decaf tea bags today to give them a go.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
