It does suck. I quit on July 24th of this year. My surgery was on September 28th. I had one slip up in that time. My cravings are very minimal. The only time I think about smoking is when when my husband calls me names and hurts me. It does get easier after the surgery. In the meantime, I slept quite a bit. Drank alot of Water and stayed out of stores where cigarettes were sold. I also am a member of quite a few quit apps. Quitnow has been the best one for me as there are many people old a d new at quitting available at any time during the day. Try the app. I also used the distraction games on the quit apps. The cravings only last a minute. Gotta breathe through them. I smoked for 20 years.

I quit January 27, 2016. Cold turkey was one of the hardest things to do so far. I haven’t slipped once. I was a 4 pack a day smoker. I tried many times to quit. It took me getting sick and almost dying from sepsis to quit. Good luck you can do this.

I quit cold turkey over 10 years ago! I educated myself through http://whyquit.com/ and truly believe it is the reason I never picked up another cigarette. There is so much information on this website and its free! The support group is great too.

Good luck and stick with it! If you stumble don't give up. You are worth it.

I found that if I got the urge to smoke, I told myself go do something else for 5 minutes. I can always smoke later if I really need it. It worked and I never did get around to smoking. It's been over 5 years and I have less than no desire to ever smoke again.

The cravings pass really quickly. It is totally doable, don't psych yourself out! You got this!

Chantix will take a little while to be effective, a couple weeks. Hang in there, get some sugar free hard candy.

I used Chantex exactly as prescribed. That meant a lot of side effects, but I stuck it out for eleven weeks. It's a miraculous drug to me. Heavy smoker for years, turned completely non smoker. Have never craved one once. That was 12 years ago.

Nicotine is pure evil, yes. I wish I had something more helpful to say, but I understand completely. There is never a time where I can't just "go for a smoke".

I was a bit "lucky", as I was essentially forced to quit following a long hospitalization where I couldn't just pop out for a cig. Seemed silly to start back up afterward, but the struggle was/is definitely there, and reckon it always will be. Especially those moments where all I want to do is chain smoke in a poorly ventilated room. It's just like my addiction to food. For me, I have to break the cycles. All of which that does me no good.

I didn't have a choice in hospital, but now left up to my own devices, I do. Sure, I could have one. But to what end? One is never enough. I'd surely want another, then another, until I'm sucking down packs at a time again. Granted, I fully understand the nicotine devil, but you owe it to yourself. You're embarking on an already difficult journey all for a better version of you.

My best advice in moments of weakness is that I just keep reminding myself "one more is never enough".

I just want to wish you all the best. Sorry for cheesiness.

Warning ... Too much information ... This story could be considered gross, read with caution!!

I quit smoking almost four years ago when I became terribly sick with a lung infection (not pneumonia) and the doctor almost put me in the hospital because my lung capacity was so limited (down to 10%) He made me take an expectorant and call him in the morning before he would let me take cough medicine so I could sleep.

The night I took the expectorant, I coughed up the biggest, nastiest glob of mucus I have ever experienced. I thought "No wonder I can't breathe with all this crud in my lungs." Of course I also thought, "Ewwwwww, this is disgusting! I never want to go through this again!"

It took me several weeks to get over that infection and by the time all that was over I had gotten past the physical addiction and I haven't smoked since. All I have to do to get past the smoking urges is remember that big awful mouthful of mucus I coughed up and all my desire for a smoke evaporates on the wind.

However, I don't recommend becoming knock-down, drag-out sick as a smoking cessation method. But maybe imagining a big glob of nasty mucus might be a helpful deterrent. It certainly is for me.

Best of luck!!

Seriously?

On what level of humanity is he if he does not know this is wrong?

I presume that you have made it clear to him that this is inappropriate/wrong. No?

You have a father/brother in your life who can talk to him or get him help?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
