Eating past the 20 minute mark

Recommended Posts

Okay, I have 2 oz of tuna. I'm eating really slowly. (Just because, not because I'm having issues eating.) My 20 minute "times up" timer goes off. Can I finish the meal?

My doctor did not provided guidance on how long a "meal" should last. I was just told to chew chew and then chew some more. I was told I should be eating an hour drinking the next and so on.

I was pretty much in the 30-30-30 category, too. I believe the guideline is so you don't drink too much and get too full, don't stretch out finishing a meal so that you develop a grazing habit, and don't drink too close to the end of eating so you don't get overly full and sick.

Pardon the pun, but this is a gut check. No one - not us, not your surgical team, no one - is going to stop you eating after 20 minutes except you. This is an intro to the maintenance phase. The surgery is a powerful tool but only you can wield it. You're learning to use the tool & understand what its limits are. I'm excited for you! Good luck!

The grazing comment hit home for my brain. I have a tendency to work through lunch, thus making my meals last quite a while. This habit is probably what lead me to eat everything in sight at dinner since I didn't eat "on time". (I.e every 4 hours)

I've added an eating timer to my other timers to help break this habit.

Thank y'all. I love this forum! I'm learning so much to help me make the most of my new tummy.

How in the world do you make 2 oz of tuna last 20 minutes? I think I'd have to lick it! Lol

LOL! I'm not a big fan of tuna so I'm basically forcing myself to eat it. My stomach has no issue with it but my nose does.

I was told 30-30-30. Stop drinking 30 mins before meal. Spend no more than 30 mins eating then don't drink for 30 mins after.

I was told 20-20-20.

Just my opinion - but the 20-20-20 and 30-30-30 are just there to make habits you need to stay 'on program', and not flush food out, etc. All good mind and body prep. In the beginning I was told it is just important to get all your nutrients in even if it takes longer than the 20 or 30 minutes, eating the required nutrients until just before being full, another reason to eat slowly. Getting planned nutrients is not grazing, grazing is mindless eating. No TV, reading a book, checking the phone or working....

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
