Hi! Your story sounds so similar to mine. I'm from the Bronx too mother two , weight is practically keeping me from doing things I used to love... so many common thing with you, my surgery day was schedule for Nov 28 it's gonna be in Bellevue Hospital.

Hope to hear more from you and your future documentaries, just know you have support here!

Awww Thank you for sharing! I'm happy for you having your surgery date even though I don't know you personally just knowing we have similarities is as if I do. Definitely going to keep updating about my process in here. Tell me about your process how has it been? Did you have to do insurance requirements? How is your Doctor? I'm happy my first appointment is tomorrow and I'm anxious to see what happens....... Thank you for your support and know also I'm here if you need support. I have notice I'm always good in supporting others and giving advice often I'm being called Dr. Phil but never take my own advice... LOL So I'm here for you. Love the quote!!

The process is fast with my insurance and this hospital, I just got home from doing the esophagram test, nasty tasting but fast, my next appointment will be for sep 15 and I'm missing the schedule date for my psychological one. I don't have to do a diet plan or loose any amount of weight but we have to do the two weeks liquid diet before surgery. I'm getting the bypass so I was ask to also get a stool sample. And last month I had my ekg, blood work and X-rays done. My doc I have not had much conv with him except the date he gave me my surgery date which was on my second visit .. can't say much there.

Best of luck on your appointment and tell me how it goes.

Can I ask you a question So you didn't have to do the 3 or 6 month diet? Why Bypass? Do you have co-morbidities? What insurance do you have? Sorry not trying to be FBI lol just new to this. I have chosen VSG yet to see what the doctors do say though. They can be like no you need bypass.... you know what I mean we never know until you are there from what I have read.

No i didn't, I guess every insurance may work differently on hospitals .. so no diet at all. I chose bypass cuz my bmi is above 40 and I feel that if I chose sleeve I wouldn't loose enough .. I weight 280 I'm 5'7 with a dislocated knee cap, I need the weight out of me cuz the last thing I need is a knee surgery, [emoji848] I don't have GERD but I do get heartburn like two weeks of a month .. I don't know if it is related but with the test I did today maybe I'll find out which Is why chose bypass since I read VSG makes it worse .. can't have that. Forgot to tell ya, my insurance is affiliated to this hospital. ( metroplus) which at the seminar they mention it would be easier for some, I heard of others who had it in 3 months. ( lucky maybe)

Congrats..... that is an amazing drop!!! If you don't mind me asking why do you say that (chicken factory)?

Typical NYC hospital that works like a slaughterhouse. You're just a number. I had to wait in recovery like 10 hours because there was no bed available :-(

Ask yourself why did you want the GBS vs VSG and then what made you choose VSG and then why now you want GBS again if whatever you answer makes sense to you gen go with that. I always say go with your gut feeling and ask if you can change surgery cause then you might then later on go get a revision and that's another surgery.

I mean theres usually a clear cut better choice. If you have diabetes, are severely obese (I mean super high BMI like 55-60s) , or have GERD the bypass is "probably" the better choice. For people with lower BMIs without GERD I would definitely want a sleeve.

The bypass is the more complicated surgery with more risks, but there are times when its more appropriate. If a surgeon recommends something I would heed their words carefully

I'm so excited one to my first appointment and everything went well and hopefully getting it done in October with Dr. Kini but only thing I'm trying to find a psychologist that does the evaluation with Fidelis because the one he recommended I will have to pay out of pocket ? Anyone knows of a psych that does it with insurance?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
