Arlington TX here and I'm on day 2 of the liquid diet. I'm not hungry, but it is just that habit of wanting to put food in my mouth. That constant snacking I would do while at my desk. I've been going to the gym and walking trying to get my mind off food. I can see these two weeks are not going to be easy. :(

I hear that it could be hard, but just focus on the long term goal. My surgeon told me that I would only have to do 3 days minimum of liquid diet before surgery.

I think pre diet may be one of the hardest parts. It does get better for almost all of us after surgery. Hang tough. You got this. It can change your life!

I did 5 days on pre diet and it was hell to me but I think it was more in my mind. I do wish I would have had that last sprite. I can't lie about that other than that I'm glad I had the surgery.

I'm one step away from completing my requirements for my insurance. It's seems like it be in August or early September when I will get the sleeve. I'm extremely nervous and back and forth on if this is the right decision or should I just keep struggling with losing/ gaining weight roller coaster. My fear of course is complications and the whole idea of having surgery because I've never had any surgery done before. I hope I'm not the only one with these fears.

I had the sleeve on 05/17/17. I believe your surgeon is in the same office as mine. Your fears are real, but I dare say the procedure is worth it. Best wishes to you.

hello there in Corpus, thank you for answering my question. I know its different for most people, but I just wanted to get an idea of what to expect. I hear the "chugging" is a distant memory...lol you cant ever chug after the surgery. I figured it may be hard because you can only take in so much.

Sugar42, your profession has A LOT to do with how well you proceed. Advanced planning is key. I work in a hospital and had to do lots of creative planning to meet my dietary needs. When I returned to work 4 weeks post op, I was in the puree stage. My surgeon's office gave me a plan whereby I was eating or drinking every 30 minutes or so. Good thing, they only required me to be on puree 2.5 weeks.

Do your research and plan, plan, plan, plan ahead for EVERYTHING. It has been a real change but again, worth it. Also, consider support groups. Have you seen a dietitian yet?

Best wishes to you.

I had my last dietitian visit on yesterday... whew! I have an office job.. so I am mostly sitting, but I have my fitbit to remind me to get up every hour! so that helps. I am not a snacking person, but sometimes I just forget to eat because I can get so busy at work and not think about. So I know from researching, that it is a MUST to get liquids, Proteins in daily. When I had my four visits with the dietitian, she was telling me I have to get in the habit of eating more... THE RIGHT things so that I can get my daily intake. I know a plan has to be in place, I do very well with a plan! I can not just jump in and hope it works out... it always turn out to be chaotic

I am now in the "waiting phase" the surgeon's team is making sure I have all that is required for my insurance so they can submit the paperwork for approval. I am super nervous and kinda excited....I am still on the fence a little because not everyone is on my team to take this path.

Someone recommended the Bariatastic App and it's helping me eat and drink. I set reminders for both and every time when the alert goes off, I drink something or eat a snack/lunch. August 12 is my surgery. Do you have a date yet Sugar42?

Congrats on getting a date, no I do not have a date yet. I just completed my requirements for the insurance. So the app can give you reminders?

My surgery was yesterday. Very minimal pain in or around incisions. Most pain comes from the gas you have floating in your body. That gas is very painful. You have to get up and walk to help that gas exit the body. I'm not hungry. I tried having a thin Protein Shake but I felt it coming back up so I stopped and went back to Water. today I tried the Protein mixed with Crystal light and it is going down okay. Haven't had to take any pain medicine today.

Yes, OMG it's the best and it's free. You can log what you eat/drink and it breaks down the Protein, carbs and fats so you know what your intake was. The reminders can be set however you want and it pops up as a subtle tone when it goes off on my phone.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
