Haha. This probably an odd question, but maybe not? What happens if you are on your period during the surgery? Do they let you use tampons or free flow (haha) everywhere? I'm probably going to be on mine when I have surgery, so I wanted to know what to expect.

I was on my period when I had my surgery. They had me wear a pad and mesh underwear like you wear just after giving birth.

I had my period. I wore a tampon, pad, and mesh underwear. I woke up the pad and mesh underwear were gone, but that tampon was still there. There was no need for a Foley. They got me up walking half asleep 8hrs postoperative. That's when I had a chance to change and insert a new one. You'll be fine. Nurses are great.

Tell the doc and the nurse at the surgery center. They will provide you with protection during surgery. The catheter goes in a different place and they have been trained to do it in a manner which will avoid your period flow.

I was on mine. No tampons for me, but a pad and mesh, both gone when I woke up. No catheter for me either. Strangely enough, I didn't have as heavy flow as I should have had. No spillage. They get you up and walking pretty quick, and you can do what you need then.

Yeah I had my period and a cathether, had to remove tampon and go free flow but your lying on absorbent pads so no worries there. When I woke up my nurse in the HDU put a tampon in for me and gave me pain relief and a hot water bottle. My period pain was worse than surgical pain lol

Just let the doc know that you have an IUD.

Oh that's such a good question I hadn't even thought about! Now that I think of it I bet I will be on my period as well.

Why must it be mesh underwear? I don't own any but I could pick some up if they'll let me wear it for the surgery.

The hospital should have the mesh underwear. The give them to women after delivering babies, so they should be able to hunt some down for you if they don't have them on hand.
My pre-op is friday, so I'm going to ask my doctor. That way I know what to expect.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
