Seeking advice on behavior modification post surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all I've got an appointment with a surgeon on 23rd June for a consultation for sleeve surgery. I am wondering could anyone offer advice or suggestions as to how best to alter my previous negative eating habits?

Does hypnosis help or CBT or a counsellor? How best to proceed?

Thanks in advance for all your help!!

Kindest regards, Catherine

Start with committing yourself to small changes or if you have the willpower...drastic ones. I started my journey pre-seminar with seeing if I could handle a liquid diet for 2 weeks. I figured if I couldn't do it before the surgery was even a possibility than how could I do it later. Once I got that under my belt, I started a modified Keto plan, which I actually enjoyed. I also started behavior modification regarding physical activity right away. I just started walking a little and kept building on where I started. By the time I had surgery (I had a 6 month pre-op program) I was walking 5ks. I did my first walk post surgery at 6 weeks. Today, I am 7 months post op and training to RUN a 15k. All things that I couldn't have done had I waited. Good Luck!

CBT research is proving quite successful with certain addictive behaviors, that would be my first stop if I were looking into professional help. Remember that dysfunctional behaviors need to be replaced with new behaviors and that setbacks do not equal failure. Good luck to you!

That's awesome, great inspiration for those of us just getting ready for surgery. My date is June 21st. Very excited!

What is CBT? Sorry I'm pretty new to this website.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. it addresses dysfunctional thinking as well as behavioral modification. It is not like psychotherapy, which is long term in most cases. This therapy is goal-directed and once you develop new skills, therapy ends unless you have another need.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
