You are not going to last 2 hours at work the following Monday. Take the time your doctor recommends to heal. You will be sorry if you don't.

You're right, she won't last 2 hours..she's going to last 8! ;)

I have surgery Thursday and back to work Monday. Every case is different, job, movement, empathy from employers etc. I'm also in a situation where if I don't work I don't get paid. There are no replacements for my position that can "take over" while I'm gone either. My mortgage isn't going to pay itself. I won't feel guilty if I make it home and spend all night on the couch/bed, but work has to be done or I wont have a couch/bed to heal in, feel me?

DedicatedLady,

First, I'm not your enemy so I don't know why you jumped off on me. Second, her struggle may not be your struggle and I'm sorry you have a job that doesn't pay medical leave or short term disability. Third, what I told her was for her own benefit because if she pops a staple she'll miss more than 2 weeks out of work, and so will you. Take it easy and allow yourself time to heal.

Did anyone take off less time? I am having surgery on a Wednesday and was planning to return to work the following Monday.

I have a mostly sedentary job but end up raking up ~10k steps from 9-5 walking around my office building.

I also work 9-5 in an office setting. I was planning to take one week off work. I'm hoping that is enough time.

From everything I’ve read, going back to work too early means you risk popping a staple and causing a leak. Having a leak could a week or more in the hospital. So even if you don’t have any sort of sick leave, going back early against doctor’s orders is a calculated risk. If you do, and you end up hurting yourself on the job, I think both Workers Comp and Disability could use your decision against you if you apply for benefits. Of course, if you don’t get benefits, then it’s a different analysis.

I work in an office setting and took two weeks. After I went back I wish I had taken the 3rd week like most recommended. Around 1 I was useless and had absolutely no energy. It’s also hard to get back in the swing of things when your having to remember to drink fluids and trying to get all your work done. I wound up working 2 full days that week and by Wednesday decided to work half days and then took that Friday off (it’s a four hour work day anyway). I was exhausted that entire week.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
