Sleepy after eating

Recommended Posts

Recently I am noticing that I am sleepy often after eating. I just don't get how a tiny stomach can put me in a food coma. I'm also eating less overall right now for religious reasons so I am wondering if I just have more restriction now and this is causing it.

It is a really odd feeling because it has been so long since it happened. Doesn't last that long.

It could also just be coincidence. I am working longer hours to save for Plastics, and it could just be general exhaustion

I'm more tired too. I wonder if my thyroid med needs to be increased? Is it allergies? Is the metabolic effect of the surgery wearing off? Warmer weather? I hope I feel more pep soon.

Yeah my allergies have been terrible too, I am taking so much medication for them. Maybe it is not really food related at all but just a lot of other things.

Sleepiness after eating is one of the signs of reactive hypoglycemia in bariatric surgery patients.

Reactive hypoglycemia (postprandial hypoglycemia) refers to low blood sugar that occurs after a meal — usually within four hours after eating. This is different from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) that occurs while fasting. Signs and symptoms of reactive hypoglycemia may include hunger, weakness, shakiness, sleepiness, sweating, lightheadedness and anxiety.

Thnaks James I will look into it. I'm also only sleeping 4-5 hours a night because of my 2 jobs, so it still might not be food related, but I am going to check it out.

I had lunch the other day and had most of those symptoms afterward.

@James Marusek

I can't edit my previous post because of forum rules, but I want to thank you so much for your suggestion.

I thought about it all day and I realized exactly what is going on. I am eating Protein Bars for lunch since I am not eating meat right now, and they are making me feel terrible! Prior to giving up meat for Lent, I rarely ever had Protein bars. Now I am having one or 2 a day and they hit my intestines very fast (I can feel it), they are slider for me basically.

I only have a week to go so no more protein bars for me.

@James Marusek

I discovered recently that my fav Protein bars were under representing their sugar content. I haven't had this issue since I started eating meat again after Lent and gave up protein bars.

Thanks again for your suggestion.

      I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
