Can we drink out of straws?

Recommended Posts

My nutritionist told me we can't because we're more likely to get air in our stomach but I've had people tell me as long as you drink it slow then you should be fine. I haven't tried it yet though.

Some people take in a lot of air with straws, some don't. My surgeon said it was fine unless I started feeling a lot of gas from it.

Never have asked this question with my surgeon, I'm 8 weeks post op gastric bypass, can we drink out of straws? What have you all been told or heard?

I have been drinking from a straw since day 3 post op and haven't had any problems -- I think they tell u not to because it can cause gas -- I haven't had this issue at all -- just like with side effects from certain medications-- it may or may not effect u

I'm 3 weeks post op sleeve my doctor told me not to drink with a straw it will stretch your sleeve and give you gas I definitely don't need any more gas so I'm not using a straw! I'm still sipping anyway I can't drink a lot at one time.

Its strange how some of us were actually given straws in the hospital to drink our Water with and others were not.

For me, I know better than to slurp my water out of a straw. However I do find that I can drink more water than just by sipping it from a glass.

My NUT said it was ok to use a straw, and if I had gas to stop and wait a few months before trying it. I have never had any gas so I use a straw daily.

Keep in mind everyone is different. We have to do what works best for us.

My NUT said try straws at week 2 if it's uncomfortable treat it like foods that make you uncomfortable and try at a later time. She says there's no such thing as "stretching the pouch " it's just straws allow air and air hurts in the tiny tummy. I'm almost 2 months post op and use straws daily, but that wasn't the case until roughly a month because they were uncomfortable up til then. I love it because I'm able to drink more Water too.

I was told to wait a year because you draw in air but I was told to buy a camelback bottle. Sold at targets or dick's. It keeps air from being drawn in with each sip.

Which has a big straw!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
