I love that! So much it literally brought a tear to my eye. Mostly because before surgery I could relate to every word you wrote. Congratulations on your successful break up and good luck on the rest of your journey!

i used to be just like you... then I got type 2 and had no choice. I got used to it after a few months and now I use it in anything I would have used sugar in. Some things I have just gotten used to eating unsweetned, ice tea is one.

I've had type 2 as well.. I've just chosen other foods rather than the gross splenda/sucralose products.

I can't even have sugar alcohols or aspartame. Sugar alcohols are bad for my IBS, but even more so, they're poison to me and I found out they caused 75% of my chronic Migraines. I went from 18-20 Migraine days a month to 4-6 a month and have sustained that for over a year. Fake stuff is terrible for your body!

You go girl! I am bummed about giving up McDonald's large Coke. I drink one at least every other day. Like you, I'm saying goodbye! We got this!

:)

Well yesterday morning, the 20th, I was sleeved. My good byes worked on my preop diet. My surgeon said my liver looked beautiful due to lack of sugar. And I lost 17lbs.
Now, the hard part will really start because it's realizing there's no going back now. This is my new future. This will be our future....but you know what? We got this. If you had a moment of weakness....do not hate yourself for it. Admit it and move on. Just like alcoholics take it day by day....so do we with our food. IIA sending good vibes to all of you.

I was a big fan of the 7-Eleven Cokes with Cherry flavoring since Canada seems to have a thing against Cherry Coke. Was nice to occasionally mix with Captain Morgan as well.

Since I stopped drinking any of the sodas for the last near 2 months (haven't had any liquor for almost 2 years -_-) they've actually started tasting like crap.

That definitely makes it easier when it takes like crap lol. That is really great that you haven't had soda in 2 months.. it's not an easy thing to give up!

Its weird, it was actually easy, although the headaches and such (caffeine/sugar withdrawal?) were a nuisance for a few days. I think psychologically I was just ready. But I was also downing 100oz sodas from 7-Eleven so that's probably why it surprised no one I wound up with diabetes and a messed up liver. The desire to live a better life far outweighed the desire for carbonated sugar Water. I think most of all I'm hard on myself because it shouldn't have taken this long to learn.

That is really impressive. I am the same, I really have a soda addiction for about 12 years now. I am also just ready to be done and be healthy before I develop something like diabetes. You should be very proud of your accomplishments, that is really great and something to be proud of! I hope it's easier than I anticipate as well!

I have no doubts your taste will change not even counting the possible changes to your taste buds other VSG'ers have mentioned post-op. It's a tough road but you can do it too. I hope your positive thoughts translate to success -- I'll be cheering for you. :)

I am actually feeling pretty well. Already on my way home. The first 6 hours after surgery were a little hard with being nauseated. But once the meds kicked in, I was much better.

Great post. Congrats on your surgery! I can truly relate to your breakup with bad foods. I did the same, had to say goodbye to a destructive friend in food. But saying hello to your new healthy food friends is wonderful and so healing.

Best to you in your recovery and journey!

I used to hate it at first also so I cut it in half and it was easier to get used to I hardly need a whole package to sweeten anything and now I use it for everything. It takes time but sugar will be something you won't be craving as you keep adding Protein to your diet. Good luck!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
