Anybody in their 20s having surgery in March/April?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd make a post to check if their were any young-uns in the UK having a gastric sleeve soon like me.

I'm currently 288lbs and am due to have surgery on the 6th April 2017 but would really love to have some gastric buddies in a similar position to go through this with

I am feeling wonderful! My Dr says that I am doing great! I was off my pain meds almost completely before coming home and have not had any for since day 6. Are you getting excited for your sleeve? That surgery date will be here before you know it.

That's really good, how long did you wait before you went back to work?

Yes, it feels so close the days are just flying by, it'll be surgery day before I know it, definitely getting excited! More for the rest of the year post-surgery tbh, I just feel so ready to get started on my weightloss journey

Same here - hopefully it won't be too difficult. How much time are you going to be taking off work/college?

I'm just taking a month off. I wanna get comfortable adjusting since a lot will be changing. Weighing/measuring food etc

I'm only talking 2 weeks but I would take a month if I could. It's definitely going to be a lot to adjust to in the first few weeks

I only took a week off. The most challenging part for me was getting in as much Water as possible. I had a lot of swelling which made swallowing difficult and uncomfortable.

Hello everyone!! I'm new on here and have my planned gastric sleeve op at Kings College on 4th April!!

I am absolutely bricking it!!

How is everyone getting on? I'm scared of being sick all the time, scared I won't drink enough and become ill!! BUT I am trying to be really really positive!

My surgeon has not put me on a pre op diet!

Love to hear from you all

Jade,

You still have a little bit of time before you would need to start a pre-op diet. They are normally started 1-2 weeks before surgery. Try not to worry too much! Monday the 13th makes 1 month post-op for me and I feel completely normal. Are you afraid of throwing up after surgery? I only had that sensation while in the hospital and they gave me medicine to stop it. You will know long before the point of getting sick when you are full and need to stop eating. As for the Water intake, that was (and still is) a struggle for me. Most of the time though your Fluid intake includes everything you eat after surgery(jello, soup, that sort of thing). As of now I can get about 40oz every day. I'm sure you will do great.

Hi
I had my surgery on the 7th March. I'm 34 (that's young right?) and live in London too.

I'm 6 days post op and feeling good.

Happy to answer any questions if you've got any.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
