Does Medicare require surgery at an approved center of excellence?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've posted this question before and I received an answer from several of you but, I've found some info. to the contrary...that they no longer require surgery from a center for excellence. Does anyone know for sure? I will be on Medicare starting in December of 2017 and I need someone to tell me the truth. Thanks!

Medicare. gov should give you the answer. After researching the question myself last year, I found that Medicare changed their policy and no longer requires surgery to be done at a center of excellence. But please check Medicare's site for yourself rather than take my word for it.

Thanks for responding to my question, mcgee311, I have found a local Dr. who will do my surgery next year and he said the same thing. Since 2013, Medicare doesn't require a hospital of excellence to perform the surgery! Yeah, now I can go to the surgeon of my choice!

Fat Two Fabulous do you have Medicare coverage? My doctor said that the requirement ended in 2013 and you can go to any bariatric surgeon you want to.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
