Eating for the first time post-op

Hi tbrickchanging we are allowed to eat chicken also in the first 4 weeks, I ate it first blended with a little gravy and it was fine then about 4 days later I had it blended on its own and I had the same sensations as you so checked in my notes and it says to sip Water to help it pass through, I did this but ended bringing the chicken back up and felt much better afterwards, it's a big learning curve and everyone is different but I feel your pain!!!

It sounds to me as though the amount of food may have been too much for your esophagus. The shoulder pain is most likely diaphragmatic pain; if the bolus of food was a bit large you could have that feeling as it passes through the lower esophageal sphincter.

chicken, even moist, is a pretty dense Protein and meats have continued to offer me some challenges even at 8 months post op. Next time, try tiny bites and very slowly...that makes all the difference for me. If I'm distracted when I eat and don't chew appropriately or take a too-large bite, I get that feeling still.

I found this interesting, I didn't think on any of the Bariatric surgeries you could eat food till after 4 weeks. I went to several classes the last 2 yrs before deciding the surgery but they were very serious about timing and healing . I'm 12 days post op with 22lbs down and had a little complications and still trying to get 64 oz of liquid in a day. Each day is better but if your tummy or esophagus isn't ready for that kind of nutrition I'd hold back and take it step by step. Hope your feeling better.

It seems like everyone's plans are different. A girlfriend had the same sleeve surgery a year ago with same doctor and her plan was different than mine. For instance she was allowed SF Jello post-op week 1 and I'm not. My niece and her husband had same surgery in a different state and they were allowed pureed foods after 1 week, but I'm to stay away from them for 2-3 weeks. I guess the point is, each doctor or practice does what they feel is best but we all might react a bit differently to the plan.

Right now my intent is to take things as slow as possible, follow my doctor-prescribed plan but to keep checking on this great site for help, suggestions, & support[emoji5]

My NUT said taking a tiny sip of Water to make dry food go down is not a problem. Just take the least number of sips you can.

Hey i had chicken about 3 weeks post op and i hated it. I was able
To eat 2 oz and didint throw up. And i also had chicken salad exactly like yours. Try tuna it has more moisture. And i make fish and salmon all very juciy. I love them. Im still on soft. I can only get in about 3 oz. and im
Full. But first 3 weeks were HORRIBLE. I even repented having the surgery. So take it slow and try it again. I havent had chicken again. I will try it these week. Im starting my 6th week. But i thing ill make it very very moist. Good luck. I hay RNY byw

My plan allowed for pureed food to start at 1 week post op and then soft solids at 3 weeks post op before being cleared for regular diet at 8 weeks. I was able to start chicken at 1 week, but I found that tuna was easier in the early days. Also I still blended my chicken with mayo and chicken broth for quite a while because it was more moist. Now at 8.5 weeks I have no issues with chicken and can eat it regularly.

I was on liquids for 3 weeks post-op, and I couldn't bring chicken in (in any form) until Week 7, I believe. I eat chicken pretty routinely now (5 months post-op tomorrow), but there is no way in the world I could have eaten it at 11 days.

Your capacity will grow as time goes on, but it will still be relatively small. I can eat about 3 oz of meat and 1 oz of green Beans at a time now, but that's the maximum.

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
