Is it more females get this surgery or that just more females get on the support group?

progress starts in the mind

I think it's just that more females get on the forums. I would assume more males get WLS, because more males are morbidly obese. But you know what they say about assuming!

I would think more women who get the surgery because we are typically more concerned and obsessed with our weight. I could be wrong though.

I just googled it. The most recent study reports 80% of WLS patients are women.

Oh wow! That's a huge percentage. I am very curious as to why that is when more men could technically benefit from the surgery.

Edit: Hmm... guess I was wrong. When you look at this page it shows that while a higher percentage of men are "overweight or obese", the numbers are the same for men and women who are obese and the percentage of women who have "extreme obesity" is higher than the percentage of men.

Thanks for the graph!

I wonder why twice as many women are in the "extreme obesity" category? In my materials from the hospital, it said morbid obesity takes 5-7 years off a woman's life, and 12-20 years off a man's. Maybe that other 4% of men just died.

I'm not going to bother with research on the web for this topic, but I would be willing to bet money that they reason for men not doing it as much as women is actually pretty simple. Ego.

I'm not saying that they feel attractive or handsome while fat, but to admit that they need a surgery to fix something it is a blow to the manhood. Same reason men will cut themselves with a power tool and use duct tape as a bandage instead of going to the Urgent Care. Is it stupid? Oh god yes. Is it true though? You bet'cha!

I think this picture sums it up perfectly:

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
