Hi All!

I'm 7+ Months post op. Ive been doing fairly well with my diet & I exercise a good bit (yoga, dance, elliptical) I've had to adjust my calorie intake. I've adjusted my exercise, meet my Protein goals and my Water goals (most days!)

But it seems no matter what I do, the weight is slow as molasses (I'm southern, can ya tell? LOL) Granted, I didn't start at a higher weight..I was 226 & my goal was to lose 91lbs. I've lost 49 & have 42 still to go. But I feel like I'm "failing" or at least flailing lol at this point.

Here's the way it's worked thus far:

Month 1: -18lbs

Month 2: -10lbs

Month 3: -5.7lbs

Month 4: -3.3lbs

Month 5: -4lbs

Month 6: -3.2lbs

Month 7: -4.8lbs (so far)

I really, truly, don't expect to lose 10bs per month! LOL My drs are in Mexico so the only contact I have from them is through emails and they are fine with the weight loss as it is. We originally set it that I would meet my goal weight by April of this year. I don't see that happening. It will be ok, but still a bummer. I don't guess I'm one of those people who will lose more than my goal.

So here's my question...is anyone that started with less than 100lbs to lose experiencing(or experienced) similar? For those who have done it, As you got closer to your goal weight, how hard was it to take the rest off?

Thanks!

This is my fear. I am starting at the same weight as you, and I worry I won't lose enough because I'll just plateau. I'm also hoping to lose about 90 pounds, but even 80 would be fine.

Have you consulted your primary care doctor? Or a registered dietician? Have you had bloodwork to make sure your thyroid, etc. are working OK?

Please don't get me wrong..I'm THRILLED with the weight I have lost. It's just slower than I thought it would have been/the drs. expected it to be (patience is NOT my virtue! LOL). I see my Primary care dr this Friday and while he is very supportive, I doubt he will have much input past "you're doing great!" LOL snce he has limited knowledge of bariatric patients. My blood pressure is down and that was his (& my!) main concern. My thyroid has been checked and my Gen Practitioner keeps up with all my Vitamins for me. Everything is good thus far.

I haven't seen a dietician other than the one I saw in Mexico before my surgery but I may if things keep going as they are. My issue is that there are NO gastric drs or anything similar in my area. I'll have to research drs 1-2 hours away and even then, Ill be paying out of pocket since it's Gastric related and my insurance won't cover it. UGH.

I'm like you..even just 80 would be ok with me but I'm hoping/working towards more! :)

Yeah, I hear that. Even 'just' losing 49 pounds would be great for my health and my energy and my self-esteem, etc., but I would definitely prefer to lose the 85 pounds that would bring my BMI into the 'normal' range.

Are you following all the rules? Not grazing? Not drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after meals? When you say you are hitting your Protein goals and Water goals "most days" does that mean you're missing them once a week, twice a week, once every two weeks? What are your Protein and Water goals? How about carbs? Have you tried adding a little more fat to your diet?

Every time I read these posts I wonder if I will feel the same. My weight and goals are identical and while surgery is still 3 months out, I feel like I would be thrilled with that rate of loss.

Everyone is doing fine. It really doesn't matter how fast you lose as long as you are losing. Your rate of weight loss has absolutely nothing to do with whether you will hit goal or not and you seem to be in the normal range. It really annoys me that doctors sell the best case scenario to folks and set them up for disappointment. Here is an example of a longer term sleevers weight loss that was posted before I hope this put things into perspective.

Please readjust expectations and focus on what you are accomplishing and not what you haven't. The fast losers are a small percentage as are the ones who exceed goal. It is far from the norm.post-300502-0-22789500-1485402363_thumb.png

Are you following all the rules? From My Dr, yes.

Not grazing? Nope. Ive never been a snacker

Not drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after meals? I'm allowed to drink before but not 30 after. I stick to this.

When you say you are hitting your Protein goals and Water goals "most days" does that mean you're missing them once a week, twice a week, once every two weeks? Once per week at most. I track during the week but not so much on weekends. I eat the same things day in and out though so there isn't much change.

What are your Protein and Water goals? Protein 65 grams (easy for me, Im a carnivore even before!) Water 8 glasses per day. I usually exceed that.

How about carbs? No more than 15 grams per meal

Have you tried adding a little more fat to your diet? Nope, but I might look into it. :)

@@Travelher Thanks for that! It's helpful to see other long-term weight loss that's not OMG fast. :)

To everyone...the journey has absolutely been worth it. :) Thank you for your responses & support!

@GACaldwell I started out at 220. I lost 20 pounds the first month (I had my surgery in December 2016) but now it's slowed to a crawl. It is frustrating!!! I'm also in Alabama too!

You'll get there! We both will...even if it's at a crawl. :) *waves to the neighbor*

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
