I feel like I'm cheating

Recommended Posts

I am 4 weeks play-op and what the surgical nutrition department says is allowed is mostly discouraged by my surgeon. On paper what he says is true for the most successful rapid weight loss but my body feels awful and brain is making plans to have some no no food party at six months.

I feel guilty and I had poor sleep but I've decided to go with the recommendations of the nutrition department and not the surgeon. That means that at max, at weeks 4-6 I can have up to 10% of my meals as complex carbs. That is nothing and honestly I'm mad at the surgeon for pushing something closer to 3% or 4%.

My weight loss will slow but I've been losing a pound a day and hating every moment of my day. Hopefully the quality of my life will improve now, my weight loss just won't be so extreme.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Different people have different nutritional requirements. There are people who thrive on virtually no carbs, and others need carbs to function well. My NP recommends carbs before working out, but I've never heeded her advice because I don't need to.

The best diet is one you'll follow. Find the balance of foods that make you feel great and still lose weight. Make a healthy eating plan you'll want to stick to. If you do have no-no foods, just make sure you're staying within your calories and Protein.

^^^^This. The best way to know is to see how it affects you. Think marathon, not sprint.

My Bariatric nutritionist made it very easy for us: 5 meals a day, 3 - 4 hours apart, no grazing in between. A meal consists of 3oz of Protein and if there is room, a multigrain or fruit serving (4 out of the 5 meals) and green veggies. 3 servings of good fat a day - 1oz nuts, 1 tsp olive oil, avocado, etc.

At 3 months I just barely have room for anything but the Protein so my multigrain might be 5 Wheat thins and my fruit ends up being 5 grapes or 2 chunks of pineapple. I drink a Protein shake in the morning to make sure I have a good protein base for the day.

I'm also losing slowly after losing 37 pounds the first month. I'm ok with it though because I am able to eat the way the nutritionist wants without feeling deprived.

My nutritionist and surgeon are on the same page as to what I should eat. I've lost 29 pounds in the 1st month. I just started on regular foods yesterday that consist of salads and such. My diet consists of almost the same thing as Airstream88. Except I can't have fruit but 3 times a week and to stay away from carbs until 6 months for the max amount of weight loss. I can have up to 50g of carbs a day. I barely eat that. I don't want them. I eat mainly Protein because it stays in your system longer and keeps you full longer as well. Carbs are a fake full. You have been given an option. You choose the option best for you. If your surgeon asks why you didn't do what he asked then let him know that him and the nustrionist needs to get on the same page. My surgeon didn't want me to have fruit at all. I honestly didn't care one way or the other. My NP said she went back and forth with him on this subject and they came to an agreement. Since I lost 22% of my weight in the 1st month she will allow me to have more fruit. Obviously if I was told I couldn't have fruit at all then I would want it. That gives me a choice. I hope this helps!

Thanks everyone, your replies really do help and provide the encouragment I need to know that I am doing the right thing.

For me feeling physically better is more important than the extreme weight loss. The weight will come off, just maybe not at a pound per day.

I was doing keto(high fat, high Protein, low carb) until my dietician said it was too low carb...now I do 30-35% complex carb, 25-30% fat and 40% protein. Rate of loss did not change.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
